All the programmes within the School provide the freedom to explore and create your own self-directed visual practice, which is then applied using our extensive professional links, to the multiple possibilities of the contemporary media, art and commercial industries.
The programmes equip graduates with the skills to enter a number of career paths. Recent Fine Art graduates have gone on to become visual artists and curators in their own right, winning the Wales Artist of the Year award and curating and exhibiting internationally. Some have initiated visual arts spaces such as Elysium and Red Door, while others have pursued careers in teaching, lecturing, arts administration and technical support. Others have pursued residencies and postgraduate courses.
The Photography programmes provide an exciting platform from which to explore the unique and critical dialogue between the still and moving image within contemporary culture. From experimental photographic art practice to the narrative possibilities of contemporary media production, you will be encouraged to consider the established traditions of your chosen medium and to then challenge these conventions through the development of your own unique voice. These programmes have a long tradition of successful graduates working in the creative industries, locally and across the globe.
We recognise that the most effective way to develop your personal practice is to enter into a discourse of ideas and images with your lecturers and contemporaries. This ongoing dialogue takes place in the form of regular critiques, seminars and tutorials. Tutorials (whether scheduled or impromptu, in groups or individual) are an essential component of all programmes and are regularly available.
Across the School teaching is delivered in lecturers, seminars and workshops, where you will be invited to contribute and develop your analytical and practical skills, confidence, and conceptual thinking. As you grow in confidence and knowledge, your studies culminate in a major final year project where you can fully express your skills and creativity in the area of your choice. All programmes include external projects and offer the opportunities for ‘live’ projects and internships.
