The School of Hospitality and Tourism prides itself on a strong relationship with industry and the opportunities we provide our students. Working with leading Tourism, Hospitality and Events organisations our aim is to prepare you for an exciting management career.
All our students undertake work placement opportunities either locally or internationally, which provides you with real life skills and allows you to apply theory in practice within your chosen field of study. Our proven record, and the placement experiences we offer can lead to many exciting careers when you graduate.
Academically our programme strategies are to initially introduce you to the underpinning business and management skills and theories within our industry sectors. You will then focus on developing your professional skills and applying the management theories you have studied through the placement programme. Finally as you work towards graduation you will develop your applied research skills and strategic understanding of our industry in preparation for your future.
All our programmes have a strong and exciting vocational flavour. Themes relating to employability, globalisation, sustainability and guest service excellence are embedded within many modules and you will also have the opportunity to study a foreign language.
Internationally work closely with key global players such as Marriott Hotels, Aspen Ski Company, Jumeirah Resorts in Dubai and Valleyfair in USA to name but a few. Within the UK we enjoy a close relationship with national tourism and events agencies such as Visit Wales, Welsh Government, VisitArran as well as local authorities.
Collaborative student learning experiences are in place with many local providers which will enable you to become involved in a number of industry based projects which include City and Council of Swansea , Carmarthenshire CC, Marriott Hotels, Refreshing North Pembrokeshire Tourism, Iron Man Wales and Kaya World Music and Arts festival. Our innovative teaching and learning strategies focus on a range of hands on practical experiences designed to develop your academic knowledge and professional skills preparing you for industry.
Field study trips will be integral to your learning experience and are a wonderful opportunity to bring the learning alive outside the lecture theatre. These experiences are related to academic theories and will give you the opportunity to see behind the scenes at a range of venues including Olympic facilities, theme parks, hotels, race courses, sports stadiums, museums and events venues in exciting destinations such as Switzerland and London, as well across Wales.
All our programmes are designed through close consultation with industry locally and internationally so we are developing the skills that service organisations require. Working closely with leading organisations we provide you with a strategic understanding of the global competencies to empower you within the work place in order to achieve the highest level of service demanded by the industry.
The School of Tourism and Hospitality is a small department driven by a team who pride ourselves on knowing our students individually and building close relationships. With this we are able to provide you with a highly supportive and quality teaching and learning environment which will stimulate and challenge you. In 2014 one of our students was runner up in the National Travel and Tourism Student of the Year Award, whilst another was voted Young Tourism Ambassador for Tourism Swansea Bay 2015.
All our lecturers are industry specialists and regularly work closely with leading organisations. Staff also regularly volunteer at key events such as Hay Festival, Swansea Festival and Iron Man Wales and work as representatives on advisory panels, tourism agencies and as external examiners at other Universities to ensure parity of academic standards. Many are actively involved in research, which results in real life industry case studies being used within lectures, as well as ensuring our programmes remain industry focused and up to date.
This year the School of Tourism and Hospitality celebrated fantastic NSS Results, with our courses scoring 87% Overall Student Satisfaction. This score ranks our programmes as the best in Wales for Student Satisfaction.

All our lecturers are research informed and many are active researchers presenting at a number of conferences and regularly publishing in specialist journals, books and the Faculty’s ‘South Wales Business Review’.

Swansea is an exciting and dynamic city with superb leisure facilities and an excellent social life for our students. Our City Centre campus provides easy access to the train station, halls of residences and Swansea’s renowned nightlife as well as the sports facilities we utilise at the LC.
As a premier league City the success of Swansea City FC provides excellent case studies for our Events, Sports Management and Tourism students. Furthermore our close links with The Swans and Ospreys enables us to base some of our modules as the impressive Liberty Stadium and work closely with Parc Y Scarlets. What better way to study events than to be based at a major venue with the opportunity to experience behind the scenes action at events, and discuss key management issues from an insider perspective.
Swansea is also surrounded by areas of outstanding natural beauty which lends itself to Tourism. The wonderful beaches of the Gower Peninsula and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park are a haven for surf and water sports enthusiasts, whilst the Brecon Beacon Mountains offer a range of exhilarating outdoor activities. These make an ideal playgrounds and a diverse range of case studies for your studies.
Wales and Swansea have a strong tradition as an events provider which makes the University and City and ideal location to study tourism, events and sport. The rich cultural heritage of Welsh Estedfodds and the Urdd are an excellent case study, along with the close proximity to Cardiff where 2012 Olympic Events and 2015 Rugby World Cup events are to be hosted. This enables many of our students to secure highly relevant part time work at Liberty Stadium, Parc Y Scarlets, Millennium Stadium, SWALEC Stadium and Ffos Las Race Course. Our links have also enabled many of our students the opportunity to become involved in the international Iron Man Wales event as well as local events such as Pembrokeshire Fish Week which also provide excellent research opportunities.
The University has an active Student Union with a range of Sports teams, Clubs and Societies. Our programmes have also set up their own Societies and students frequently become involved in organising student events which will be excellent career experience for you.
Starting at University and moving away from home is often an unsettling experience however to help you settle in we will offer you the chance to have a ‘buddy’ who will be a student trained to provide you with support when you are starting out on your University life with us. You will also have a personal tutor to provide additional support, and we work hard to provide a supportive environment in which to study by operating an ‘open door policy’ and running tutorials so there is always someone available to support you.
Our team will work hard to ensure your time with us is not only enjoyable but also rewarding. We endeavour to provide you with the specialist skills and knowledge needed to maximise your graduate employability. We look forward to working with you.
All programmes within the School of Tourism and Hospitality have a strong global flavour. We work closely with key global placement employers to offer a range of exciting international placements, organise overseas field trips, we welcome leading managers from all over the world to present to our students as well as utilising a range of international case studies within lectures and assessments. Students also have the opportunity to study languages and develop their cultural understanding through a strong global focus.
We organise regular presentations from a range of local, UK and international industry managers. This will provide you with detailed industry knowledge and some exciting opportunities to apply for. We also provide tutorial support to help you with employment applications, cv writing, interview preparation and presentation skills to prepare students for professional industry based placements.
We currently have a number of students undertaking International Placement Experiences - Why not follow their stories on our website, and learn about their experiences as they spend anything from 8 weeks to a year during their studies working in their chosen sector of the industry.
After spending an exciting 6 months working in food and beverage at the Zabeel Saray Hotel and Resort in Dubai Terry Bishop and Chelsea Clements are currently undertaking a placement from November to September at the exclusive Little Nell Hotel in Aspen, Colorado. They have joined Andrea Fernandes, Rowan Davies and Amy Metcalfe who are already enjoying a 9 month experience at the same hotel working in Hospitality and Events.
Our current 2nd year students are busy applying for positions and many have already secured wonderful opportunities with Valleyfair Amusement Park in Minneapolis, Challenger Sports in USA, PGL and American Summer Camps, as well as a range of local employers.
