Minister Counsellor Mr. Wang Yongli receives Honorary Fellowship from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David

Mr. Wang Yongli, the Minister Counsellor of the Educational Section of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northen Ireland, was recently awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) during the first of its Swansea Graduation Ceremonies in the city’s Brangwyn Hall (Monday, July 10th 2017).

Born in March 1963 in Shaanxi Province, China, Mr. Wang Yongli obtained his BA degree at Lanzhou University of China and his EMBA in Nanyang Technological University of Singapore.

Having worked within many different sectors of the Ministry of Education at the Central Government of the People’s Republic of China, Mr Wang’s career has primarily focussed on international co-operations and exchanges in educational affairs. 

From 1990-1993, Mr. Wang Yongli worked at the Chinese Embassy in Canada.  From 1995-1998, he worked for the first time in the UK, based at the Chinese Embassy in London, and between 2001 and 2008, he worked at the Chinese Embassy in Singapore. All of his embassy work was related to the communication and exchange of Education between China and the countries in which he was posted.

Based on his significant contribution, Mr. Wang Yongli was promoted from the third secretory to the first before finally being promoted to the Counsellor of the Educational Sections. Last year, he returned to the UK Chinese Embassy to act as the Minister Counsellor of the Educational Section. 

Before his latest appointment, Mr. Wang Yongli worked at the Hanban and Confucius Institute Headquarters where he was the Deputy Director General at the Hanban and the Deputy Chief Executive of Confucius Institute Headquarters.

“The great support of Hanban and the Confucius Institute Headquarters to the UK Confucius Institute, including the Confucius Institute at our University cannot be done without his strong leadership,” says Yanxia Zhao, Professor of Chinese Studies and Comparative Religion at UWTSD.

“As part of his Embassy positions, most of his work has related to international co-operations and exchanges in educational affairs.  We believe that during his time as Minister Counsellor, Mr. Wang Yongli will make an even greater contribution to the collaboration and co-development between Chinese and Welsh education. 

“It is with great pleasure that we give Mr. Wang Yongli, the Minister Counsellor of the Education Section of the Chinese Embassy, a very warm welcome to the UWTSD family as we proudly award him an Honorary Fellowship,” adds Professor Yanxia Zhao.
