UWTSD hosts Advocacy Conference

On Tuesday, March 28th, the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) hosted the first ever annual conference of The Three Counties Advocacy Strategy Network at its campus in Carmarthen.

Advocacy Conference March 2017

Entitled ‘The Preventative Agenda,’ the conference explored Advocacy, Early Intervention and the Social Services and Wellbeing (Wales) Act.

As well as a key note address by Pete Irvine, Chair of the Three Counties Advocacy Network, the day offered delegates the opportunity to take part in a number of discussions and workshops including Advocacy in Practice; Elder Abuse and Keeping Safe; Supporting Carers and Carers’ Right; a Children’s and Young Person’s project as well as a session on meaningful data in evaluation.

UWTSD was also an integral part of the event with Phillip Morgan, Director of the new Advocacy Studies programmes outlining the University’s new provision in the field.

“We were delighted to host this collaborative conference and to be able to showcase the exciting new programmes of study on offer at UWTSD,” says Phillip Morgan.

“The debate around Social Policy and the provision of services has highlighted the need for professionals who are able ‘to appreciate how social policies are continuously reconstructed and changed' and 'the contribution to these processes from those who come from different value positions and different social, cultural and economic backgrounds'.

“With the introduction of the ‘Social Services and Wellbeing Act (Wales) 2014’ there is a statutorily requirement to hear the voice of Service users through the use of advocates, both instructed and non-instructed. Our new programmes have been designed as a sound preparation for students who wish to enter professions working in a diverse range of fields within society including health and/or social care, educational settings, probation service, voluntary organisations, social enterprise, youth support, community education, police services,” he adds.

The conference was attended by over 80 delegates from a range of health boards, agencies and charities allowing guests to exchange their knowledge and to share best practice.
