UWTSD's Dr Jane Davidson to deliver talk at TEDxSwansea on June 24

UWTSD's Dr Jane Davidson will deliver a talk at TED, the independently organised TEDxSwansea, which takes place on Saturday 24 June at the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea.

Dr Jane Davidson

The theme for this year’s event is ‘Evolve’ and it will run from 5pm until 9pm.
The news follows the successful TEDxSwansea conferences that took place in 2015 and 2016. Dr Davidson, Pro-Vice Chancellor for External Engagement and Sustainability, is one of the five speakers taking part this year.
Dr Jane Davidson is a former Welsh Government Environment and Sustainability Minister (2007-2011) and is Director of the Institute of Sustainable Practice, Innovation and Resource Effectiveness at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. According to the Independent on Sunday in 2009, she is the third most influential environmentalist in the UK. With the world in a precarious condition and with nations struggling to collectively find a solution for a sustainable future. Dr Davidson will explore the tangible ways in which nations can evolve to create a sustainable future, both for individual countries and for the planet as a whole.
Also confirmed as a speaker is Mai Davies, a journalist, television and radio broadcaster, currently working as a news presenter at the BBC. She has also worked as a daytime news anchor at Sky News and a political and news presenter at ITV. Mai also passes on her expertise as a presentation and media trainer for international training organisations, broadcasters, major companies and NGOs.

In her TEDxSwansea talk Mai will explore our everyday communication. This includes interaction with each other, to our social media audience, to our colleagues and, sometimes, to the public. She will look at how we conduct our communication and will ask the question, “are we failing to connect with the people we want to connect with?”
More speakers will be announced in the next few weeks.
TEDx is a program of locally organised events that bring the community together to share a TED-like experience. Some of the best talks from TEDx events have gone on to be featured on and garnered millions of views from audiences across the globe.
TEDxSwansea brings together the region’s leading innovators and explores some of the world-leading work that is taking place in the fields of science, technology, business and art. The event will also be a showcase for creative talent, with live performances during the day.

Steven Stokes, TEDxSwansea Director, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received from everybody in the region. Our previous two TEDxSwansea events were very successful and we have even received positive feedback from TED headquarters in New York, who described our events as interesting and diverse.
“The region is growing in confidence, and so it should. What we have to offer is something worth celebrating. The fusion of natural beauty, industrial dominance and an ancient history has shaped the people and the landscape, however, we are no longer clinging to our past. Parts of the city are shedding their skin, with new developments offering a 21st-century experience for recreation, retail and education.
“However, it’s not just the physical developments we should be focusing on. Behind the walls of our businesses and educational institutions are the innovators and creators whose work is having an impact across the world. It is these people we are keen to support and celebrate by giving them a global platform to share their ideas.
“With the support of the region and its people, it is our aim to ensure TEDxSwansea becomes one of the most respected and eagerly anticipated events in the international TEDx calendar."
