UWTSD and Wuhan University of Technology (WUT) celebrate strategic partnership


The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) and Wuhan University of Technology in China, will celebrate their longstanding strategic partnership with a series of events to be held in Swansea on Wednesday, 10th January 2018.

The University will bestow an Honorary Doctorate (Doctor of Science) upon Professor Qingjie ZHANG, President of WUT, in recognition of his strategic leadership and considerable academic achievements.  Professor Zhang was recently selected as an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, the highest honour for a Chinese scientist.  He is the Director of the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Technology for Materials Synthesis and Processing, and Chair Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at WUT.  

Professor Medwin Hughes, DL, Vice-Chancellor of UWTSD said “I’m delighted to bestow an honorary doctorate upon Professor Zhang in recognition of his visionary leadership and his significant achievements. The longstanding partnership between both universities has led to considerable cultural and academic opportunities for staff and students over many years. The establishment of the UWTSD Wuhan Ligong College in Swansea is a significant development in our strategic partnership which will provide further opportunities for academic collaboration, joint research initiatives as well as opportunities to exchange students. I look forward to the future development of this initiative which demonstrates the mutual benefits of nurturing strong relationships between academic institutions in Wales and China”

Professor Zhang, President of WUT, responded “I am very excited to be awarded UWTSD’s honorary doctorate degree. I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to UWTSD for this special honour. I firmly believe this is not only an award to me but, more than that, it will encourage further and deeper cooperation and mutual understanding between Wuhan University of Technology and University of Wales Trinity Saint David. UWTSD is renowned for its teaching and research excellence, especially high level of international cooperation. I am proud of being an honorary PhD of this great university.

“As we all know, the fifth UK-China high level people to people dialogue was held in London last month. Chinese Vice Premier Mme Liu Yandong and UK Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt signed a joint statement in which the two sides welcomed improved mobility of young people between our countries through a range of programmes and the cooperation.”

As part of the celebrations the University will launch a number of research centres which will be established in Swansea in collaboration with WUT:

Overseas Practice and Internship Base of Wuhan University of Technology, is part of WUT’s integrated practice and internship programme in China and abroad which will fully utilise the social facilities in WUT and UWTSD.  The Centre will look to develop a practice and internship service to students from WUT and UWTSD in order to develop an international and integrated practice and internship programme between the two institutions.

Centre for Emergency Management Research is committed to international cooperation in the scientific research of emergency management and academic exchanges between WUT and UWTSD. After a certain period of construction and cooperation, it is hoped that this Centre will be developed into a comprehensive academic organisation which can provide services to governmental decision-making, enterprise development, personnel training and cultural exchange.

Centre for Oriental Arts and Culture Research will:

  1. Promote the exchange of art and design work among the faculties of both institutions, including exhibitions, academic visits, international conferences, etc.
  2. Build a platform for Sino-British educational resource sharing and undertaking international curricula exchanges.
  1. Establish art and design workshops for students of both institutions and participating in international competitions and exhibitions.
  2. Jointly developing art and design works and promoting art and culture.

The Centre will establish a designated workspace for WUT’s School of Art and Design in order to facilitate the development of joint doctoral research initiatives with UWTSD.

Centre for Excellence in Materials Science and Engineering is WUT’s overseas talent training centre of the International School of Materials Science and Engineering (ISMSE). Located in the UK, the centre aims to introduce world-leading education resources from UK and European countries in order to develop students’ innovative capability and equip them with global vision. ISMSE is committed to building an inter-disciplinary training centre of excellence to nurture innovative talent and provide the freedom to undertaken research and discovery.

Following the afternoon’s proceedings, the official opening of an exhibition of Chinese Paintings and Porcelain Artworks, Flame of China; Flow of Culture, to be held in the Alex Reading Room from 5pm.  The Exhibition will be open to the public between 10 – 12 January and will feature the work of Chinese artists: Pan Changxue, Zhang Zhengzhong, Chen Wenli, Xu Jinbo, Wang Qingli, Zhang Ganlin, Zhang Xiaolan, Dai Qingquan, Yu Yinguying, Xiong Jingjing.
