Summer Show: Graphic Design

Four yellow triskeles each with two legs and one arm hold up the letters blink; the background is pink and dotted with yellow stars.

"Look through the noise to truly connect"

Looking, and looking deeply is becoming less common than we might assume.
The world, or a less sensual representation of it, exists on a small screen at arm’s
length. This parallel dimension, in which the fear of missing something has
become a new normal, means we are in danger of missing everything.

As visual communicators, we must look at ourselves and others if we aspire
to make our words and images combine successfully. We must look at things
from someone else’s point of view, look at problems from different angles. Look
through an infinity of distraction and noise to truly connect. Look at the bigger
picture. Look at all the possibilities there are.

We look into the eyes of our students and much is revealed. Eyes narrowed
in determination or wide in joy at a moment of discovery. There have been
memorable moments this year in which our own, older eyes have widened with
pleasure at the heart and soul so evident in many projects. Personal politics,
social injustice and hard-fought software battles sit comfortably with unabashed
aesthetic indulgence and solid commercial clout.

Whatever their motivations, today’s new designers must show great bravery in
revealing themselves through their work. To find one’s unique visual voice is its
own challenge but using it to shout or sing requires a greater leap of faith.

Take a moment, Blink, enjoy.
