What was your favourite thing about Swansea campus?

The location! In Swansea you have the most amazing beaches, hills and countryside right on your doorstep. As well as this you have all the amenities you would expect in a big city, plus some fantastic bars and pubs, which is of course very important! The campus is close to the city centre so you’re never far away from everything Swansea has to offer.

Why did you choose UWTSD?

I looked around many unis and found that most felt quite sterile. Immediately I felt inspired by how enthusiastic everyone is at UWTSD; the lecturers are genuinely passionate about what they do and are very welcoming. The facilities on offer also impressed me, with lots of opportunities to participate in hands-on activities to support the theory learnt in lectures.

What did you enjoy outside your studies?

I enjoyed being a member of Team MCR (now Team MSport Eng). This allowed me to improve my practical skills and gain hands-on experience of working in a race team and competing at events all over the country.

I was a student rep for my course and attended multiple outreach events at local schools on behalf of the University.

What are you doing now, how did you get to where you are and how has your course helped you in your career?

After graduating, I started working as a Technical Sales Engineer for Diffusion – a commercial heating, air conditioning and ventilation (HVAC) manufacturer. I used the technical knowledge gained throughout my degree to help clients specify and design an HVAC solution to satisfy their specific requirements. I used previously learnt thermodynamic principles to calculate perform the required heating/cooling calculations.

I recently moved into the defence industry, now working as a Systems Design Engineer for MBDA, a world leader in the manufacturing of defence equipment. Complex defence systems require a broad engineering skillset; experience from UWTSD of working with key engineering principles and tools, particularly MATLAB, whilst juggling multiple projects and sticking to strict deadlines helps me in the role hugely.

What was your favourite thing about your course?

Having the opportunity to work with like-minded, passionate people. Studying engineering, particularly automotive engineering, meant I was surrounded by people with the same interests as me. I made many close friends who I still see today. The lecturers share that enthusiasm and help achieve UWTSD’s uniquely personal and supportive learning style.

Would you recommend UWTSD and why?

I would always recommend UWTSD; I thoroughly enjoyed my time studying there. The skills I learnt allowed me to be where I am today, on the career path I have always wanted.
