Artistic Bridge between Brecon and China

On September 22nd the Andrew Lamont Gallery at Theatr Brycheiniog, Brecon will be opening an exhibition of contemporary art from China by four leading artists from Shaanxi Province. Entitled ‘Bridge’, the exhibition has taken its inspiration from one of the most famous classical poems of the Song Dynasty (960-1279 CE) ‘Immortals at the Magpie Bridge’ by Qin Guan.

Exhibition of Chinese Art

In Chinese culture, the bridge symbolises the bringing together of opposites through the creation of order, unity and harmony. But for us today the significance of the ‘Bridge’ exhibition of Chinese art is the continuing link it represents between Wales and Chin which are moving ever closer for trade and international co-operation.

Organised by the Confucius Institute at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) with the generous help of Brecon artist, Robin Martin, and in conjunction with the Shaanxi International Cultural and Economic Exchange Centre, the exhibition offers a first hand glimpse of China’s huge artistic talent.

The exhibition is closely linked to the Confucius Institute’s work in schools. During two weeks at the end of September, the Chinese artists will be visiting primary and secondary schools in South Powys, giving art workshops and master classes .

Brecon has been building strong connections with Xi’an, the famous cultural capital of Shaanxi Province, for a number of years. In 2012 the town hosted its first group of visiting artists and the successful ‘Harmony’ exhibition was held. This cross-cultural collaboration led to the introduction and placement in local schools of teachers from Beijing Union University, one of UWTSD’s foreign partner universities. David Liang, and Sam Qin, both Confucius Institute teachers in Brecon and Crickhowell, have become familiar figures in the many local schools where they teach children as young as five how to speak Chinese and find out all about life in China.

Krystyna Krajewska, Executive Director of the Confucius Institute at the University, said “With the opening of the 2016 ‘Bridge’ exhibition we hope to further foster the close cultural educational bridge between Wales and China.”

‘Between two points, line minimum, after starting from the beginning, dream I am to build The Bridge.’

(2013) Poem by Wang Zhao, visiting artist
