Reaching Wider Year 12 Summer University at UWTSD Carmarthen

This week saw 60 young people from across South West Wales coming together at UWTSD Carmarthen for the South West Wales  Reaching Wider Partnership Summer University 2016.  The Summer University takes place at 3 different locations over 3 weeks in July.

The Summer University sees students choosing one subject to study over the three weeks that is in line with their current studies, the subjects on offer vary each year.  All students also learn essential skills for success in higher education including writing and presentation skills, critical thinking, research and referencing skills and time management.

The Summer University is aimed at Year 12 and First Year Level 3 students from schools and colleges in South West Wales who have the ability to succeed but, because of family, personal or other circumstances, are experiencing barriers which may prevent their progression to higher education (see application pack for further details).

Students who complete the Summer University successfully will be given a reduction in the required A-level grades (or equivalent UCAS points) by Swansea University and University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

All Summer University students will also enjoy a full and varied social programme all free of charge. Previous activities have included: bowling, cinema, football, basketball, karaoke, quiz nights, discos, dance workshops and much more.

Rebecca Griffiths, Reaching Wider officer said:

“The Reaching Wider Summer University 2016 sees all students following an academic module in the morning which gives them a subject specific insight into university life for example Psychology, Criminology and Law.  In the afternoon students attend a class entitled Skills For Higher Education- here they learn more generic skills for example essay writing. By staying in halls of residence, students get a true taste of university life. The evenings see them taking part in social activities, for example visiting the local cinema. It's amazing to see students’ independence skills developing, confidence levels rise and this is matched by an increase in their desire to become university students themselves.”

Trystan Rees, Senior Widening Participation Officer at UWTSD said: “It’s great to see the Summer University taking place at UWTSD Carmarthen. Students gain such valuable insights into university life by taking part on the course. With a range of sessions that concentrate on many different aspects of university, it gives the students a clear understanding of what to expect when they start university.”
