Starship Student Entrepreneurship Awards at UWTSD


Last night (4th February), University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) held its inaugural Starship student entrepreneurship awards evening, following students’ applications from all academic disciplines, eager for the opportunity to realise their entrepreneurial ambitions.

Swansea Bay Business Club sponsored the event and provided £1,000 as prize money (£250 per category) for the winners, to kick-start their creative ideas.

Swansea Bay Business Club president Hayley Davies said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring UWTSD’s Starship event and supporting student entrepreneurs, ensuring that the talent and ideas put forward this evening stay in Swansea Bay. Swansea Bay Business Club is passionate about celebrating the success of enterprising students and helping them to launch their ideas into the wider sphere.  They are the business leaders of tomorrow and I’m sure that we will be seeing impressive things from many of the faces here tonight.”

Kathryn Penaluna, Enterprise Manager at UWTSD, said: “UWTSD embeds entrepreneurial thinking across all the subject areas. Equipping our students with skills to increase their employability is very important to us – it adds value to their degree and gives them confidence in their own abilities. Starship is a celebration of this thinking and an opportunity for us to collaborate with Swansea Bay Business Club to showcase some of our more enterprising students. Working in partnership with businesses really increases the economic impact of what we can achieve in Swansea, a City on the brink of exciting change.”

The event was held at the Creative Bubble premises in Swansea city centre, a joint collaboration between UWTSD and Swansea BID to encourage students to put on events in Swansea, such as pop-up shops, exhibitions, performances and workshops.  Attendees included representatives from Swansea Bay Business Club, Swansea BID, Leader of the Council, Assembly members and UWTSD staff and students. 

The winners of the Starship Awards were as follows:

James Coyle-King, MA Transportation Design, won Best Creative Idea with a Virtual Reality Business Showcase Service. James’ idea was a Virtual Reality service where the customer experiences an immersive 3D environment. This service helps customers visualize their own processes of design for a more realistic way to communicate ideas. An example of this would be a kitchen installer showing a customer their new kitchen in virtual reality with the ability to make colour/layout changes.

Frederick Stephen Perry, BA Sports Management, won Best Potential for Growth and Employment Idea with aTraining App for personal trainers and managers to educate, motivate and monitor their performance. It guides the personal trainer to build a successful client base whilst their managers are able to monitor each personal trainer’s progress and conduct one-to-one meetings through their own management app.

Ross Weaver, BA Advertising and Brand Design won Most Innovative City Centre Event Idea with the World’s Biggest Welsh Cake. The idea is to complement existing seasonal promotions that Swansea BID manages in the City Centre. This idea would take place on St David’s Day or other Welsh themed events such as ‘Get Welsh’. The event would encourage local businesses to set up stalls in the street to promote their products/services. Swansea would then attempt to break the World Record for the biggest Welsh cake (this currently stands at 1.5 metres wide).

Daniel John Huxtable, BA Graphic Design won Most Positive Impact on the Community Idea with a Graphic Design Agency / Martial Arts in Community. Huxtable Marketing & Design Solutions helps small businesses within the community with their branding, advertising and marketing. They also work with the organization to increase the social impact of what they do. A notable example is with a martial arts club - rebranding their material and giving them a brand identity that removes the typical cliché of being violent or aggressive. The new brand shows that Martial Arts can create changes in the lives of adults and children by increasing confidence, promoting discipline and respect for each other.
