Swansea Glass Triumphs in International Awards

The internationally respected Glass Department at UWTSD’s Swansea College of Art has once again dominated the UK’s top Glass awards in London.

The department has scooped 5 out of a possible 8 awards in the ‘Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass’ annual ‘Stevens Competition’.

This year’s brief to design a window and fabricate a sample panel as a memorial to the crew of the ‘Titanic’ captured the imagination, of artists across Europe. The Awards were judged by a panel of leading international ‘Glass Artists’, including Swansea Alumni Martin Donlin and Melanie Howes.

First prize was awarded to Swansea Alumni Sarah Knighton with Highly Commended awards going to recent UWTSD Swansea graduate David Light and current second year student Aaron O'Brien.  The prizes for craftsmanship and presentation were awarded to former UWTSD Swansea students Gemma Curtis and Sarah Knighton respectively.

Course Director, Lisa Burkl said:  Once again we are delighted and proud to celebrate the success of our alumni and current students. The Glass Department at UWTSD Swansea’s College of Art continues to be at the forefront of creativity in contemporary glass art.”

Swansea College of Art will be holding an open day on the July 2 for anyone interested in discussing their options to study at Wales’ top Art College. To book your place visit www.uwtsd.ac.uk
