UWTSD Professor of Creative Entrepreneurship Andy Penaluna is announced as TEDx Speaker

With less than a month to go before the sell-out global phenomenon TEDx returns to Swansea, organisers have announced that one of the city’s internationally recognised academics will be taking to the stage.

Professor Andy Penaluna is Director of the International Institute for Creative Entrepreneurial Development based at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in Swansea. He is recognised across the world for his work embedding business and enterprise skills within education. Professor Penaluna has advised the United Nations, the European Commission and individual governments across the world, and is responsible for writing the world’s first creative entrepreneurship curriculum now embedded at all levels across educational institutions in Macedonia. His work has been recognised through a number of high-profile accolades, including the Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion in 2015.

Professor Penaluna said: “With regards to academic attainment, education, and creative thinking; I believe that it’s time to think again. We constantly hear calls for more creative people who can spot opportunities, have lots of ideas, and make things happen. Our economy needs them, because without entrepreneurs new businesses do not evolve. The sustainability and ‘greening the world’ champions also need them, because we need to find ecologically sound ways to do things differently.

“In my TEDxSwansea talk I will suggest education needs them too, because right now we are evaluating what students and pupils do in entirely the wrong way. They are not getting great grades for being creative.”

Steven Stokes, TEDxSwansea Lead Organiser, said: “Through the event our aim is to shine a light into this corner of Wales and highlight the significant part our region plays in today’s world. With this in mind we are delighted that Professor Penaluna is a speaker at TEDxSwansea 2016. He is making a significant impact at the highest level in his field of expertise, and is an ambassador for our region.”

TEDxSwansea will take place on Saturday 4 June in the Arts Wing at Swansea Grand Theatre. The event sold out within three days of going on sale in January.

TEDxSwansea sponsors include: University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD), South Wales Evening Post, Unit 4, Brightseed Digital Creative Agency and Buffoon Film and Media.

3. About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organised events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organised.

4. About TED

TED is a nonprofit organisation devoted to ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’. Started as a four-day conference in California almost 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes on a diverse mix of topics. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com.
