UWTSD Student visit to BRE Innovation Park

Recently, a group of second year BSc Project & Construction Management, BSc Building Surveying  and BSc Architectural Technology students had the opportunity to visit the BRE Innovation Park in Watford.

The students had the opportunity to visit and see the latest innovative solutions for buildings and sustainability. Improvements in energy efficiency, materials or waste minimisation are some examples shown in the exhibition BRE Innovation Park.

The BRE Innovation Park comprises different solutions for housing and public spaces with low carbon products, materials and technologies. It hosts some of the world’s most sustainable buildings and landscapes. It is also a very important research site with the latest innovative solutions.

Different new products and materials are used for insulation, improving characteristics for roofs, facades and partitions. Solutions for affordable, sustainable housing were also present, such as Tigh Grian and Userhuus, with the use of intelligent construction systems and assembled panels for fast speed construction. Heat recovery ventilation systems and wall-mounted electric panel heaters with a high efficiency were also present. All exhibitions were a demonstration for students to learn.

The students attended an initial presentation of the Park and were then guided around for 2 hours. The trip was organised by the School of Architecture, Built and Natural Environments, in the Faculty of Architecture, Computing and Engineering.

The trip was programmed inside the module for the BREEAM UK New Construction Scheme taught by the School of Architecture, Built and Natural Environments. With this module, students have the opportunity to get qualified to become a BREEAM assessor in future.
