Spectacular views for SA1 Swansea Waterfront

UWTSD’s new £300million SA1 Swansea Waterfront development will have spectacular views of Mumbles, Swansea Bay and the heart of the city centre, thanks to local aluminium manufacturing and installation company, AB Glass.

The company, based in Swansea has been appointed by Kier Construction to install windows, doors and curtain wall screens at the prime waterfront location.

The contract is worth approximately £1.4 million to AB Glass, which was recently announced as winner of the Business of the Year award and the Manufacturing Business of the Year award at the Swansea Bay Business Awards 2017.

Design work by AB Glass commenced during February 2017, with installation work on the new waterside development getting underway last month. AB Glass’ involvement in the UWTSD project demonstrates the company’s continuing relationship with Kier, and development of an exciting new relationship with UTWSD.

UWTSD’s SA1 Project Manager Mike Bessell said: “The University’s SA1 Swansea Waterfront development is making incredible progress, and will be an aesthetically stunning setting for both current and future students. Ensuring local businesses benefit from the huge investment is important to the University and its continual commitment to the region’s economic growth. For AB Glass, a Swansea based company, to secure such a significant contract on the project reinforces this commitment."

Alan Brayley, managing director at AB Glass, said: “This new university development adds to what is a vibrant area of Swansea and we are very proud to be a part of it through our partnership with Kier. We have worked with the firm on other education projects, including the Callywith College project in Cornwall most recently. Our continuing collaboration with Kier is therefore testament to the expertise and high quality service we are able to deliver on such significant projects.”

Jason Taylor, operations director at Kier Construction, said:

“We are delighted to work in partnership with local SME AB Glass on this prestigious project for University of Wales Trinity Saint David, based in the heart of SA1 Swansea.

“Kier has a long-term working relationship with AB Glass, based on strong teamwork and commitment, which will support the successful delivery of this project and we will work together to maximise learning and development of the local workforce with employment opportunities.”

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David's SA1 Waterfront project, with the first phase providing a home for the faculties of architecture, computing and engineering, education and communities, as well as a new library, will open in 2018, but has already provided work for local people and students.

Kier has opened a new office in SA1 and using local suppliers and sub-contractors. These include Neath-based Cuddy Group and Swansea firm Donal Hayes & Sons, as well as AB Glass.

New job opportunities have also been created for three UWTSD students — Zoe Morgan, Rhys Williams and Neil James — who have been employed by Kier to work on the development, with further jobs to be created in the coming months.

SA1 Swansea Waterfront will also draw students from local schools and colleges to experience the construction industry first-hand, and be home to a £6.5 million industry-funded Construction Wales Innovation Centre.
