UWTSD announces new partnership with That's TV, following its merger with Swansea's Bay TV

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) is delighted to announce a new partnership with UK media group That’s TV, following its merger with Swansea’s Bay TV.

The partnership builds upon the strong relationship UWTSD has built up with Bay TV Swansea since its launch in 2016. That’s TV is the most significant provider of local TV in the UK with a network consisting of 14 stations.

Bay TV is Swansea Bay’s local community TV channel. Launched in July 2016, the station is one of 34 local TV channels licensed by Ofcom across the UK. Based in UWTSD Swansea College of Art’s Dynevor Centre for Art, Design & Media, and the station shares studio facilities with the University’s Film & TV Production courses. This allows Bay TV to deliver live broadcasts and pre-production, production and post-production activities as well as collaborating with the staff and students on new programme developments.
The value to the University of partnering with a professional broadcaster can be seen in the opportunities for student engagement in commercial broadcast TV. Further benefits for the co-location include opportunities for staff to appear on local TV, together with regular visits from senior figures in politics, business, civic society, the arts and culture.

As with all of the new local TV stations, it works closely with the community, local businesses and independent producers to deliver quality television made by and for local people.  Their mission is to produce programmes designed to inform, entertain, engage, educate and involve local viewers. This fits perfectly with the UWTSD mission of transforming education and transforming lives.  As Bay TV Swansea joins the growing That’s TV Family, it will be part of the largest local TV group in the UK.

Dan Cass, CEO of That’s TV, said: “We are very excited about expanding our presence into the area and are thrilled that Bay TV and the University has chosen to join the That’s TV network. We see this as an important next step in consolidating the UK’s local TV market.

"That’s TV is committed to quality local broadcasting and will work in partnership with UWTSD to develop this across the Swansea Bay City Region. In addition, this partnership will allow students studying at UWTSD Swansea the opportunity to undertake work placements across the That’s TV network of stations.”

Peter Townsend, Chairman of Bay TV Swansea said: “Bay TV Swansea has built up a solid platform of local news, current affairs and popular entertainment. The partnership with the University is providing students with opportunities to train on industry standard equipment in live broadcast situations and develop programming ideas with Bay TV staff. The Local Television Network is acting as a springboard for individuals who are starting their careers in the TV broadcast industry with local examples being two of the Bay TV team recently accepting positions with BBC Wales and BBC Broadcasting House, London.”

Professor Ian Walsh, Dean of Swansea College of Art said: “It is clear that there is a real cultural resurgence in the city which provides great opportunities for this new partnership.

“Swansea Bay City Region has a wide range of venues with arts centres like the Glynn Vivian, the Grand Theatre Arts Wing and the Mission Gallery, drama at the Grand Theatre, Dylan Thomas Theatre, Volcano Theatre and the Taliesin Arts Centre and music at the Brangwyn Hall. The University plays a leading role in the culture of Wales and of Swansea. The partnership with That’s TV offers an opportunity to showcase the student led Copper Coast International Film Festival which attracts over 2000 entries from around the world. There is the further opportunity to widen the reach of the SAND Festival. SAND (Swansea Animation Days) has been running for over a decade and regularly attracts guest speakers from the leading international animation companies to Swansea College of Art.”
