UWTSD Graphic Design graduate showcases his creativity at Sky News

UWTSD graduate James Packer has taken his passion for graphic design to London, where he now works as a junior designer for Sky News.

His new role involves creating daily live graphics and animations to accompany what the presenters are saying, creating map animations for breaking news and preparing images.

James graduated from the university’s Swansea College of Art this summer with a first class honours degree in Graphic Design.

The former Olchfa Comprehensive pupil, said he chose to study in his home city because UWTSD staff were so friendly and welcoming during the open day, and he was impressed by the range of different teaching experiences and live events on offer.

He said: “I was a student local to Swansea so for me settling into university life was fairly quick. From start to finish, the lecturers, support staff and students of all years were welcoming, friendly and above all helpful. I felt really comfortable learning my craft because of such a spacious and well equipped building along with knowledgeable and passionate lecturers.”

As part of his degree course, James was selected to attend New Designers in London. New Designers is the most important design event in the UK ensuring the life cycle of the design industry continues and thrives.

Entering its 34th edition, the New Designers exhibition brings together design education, design consumers and the design industry to celebrate and recognise and the next generation of graduate designers.

James said: “Places were awarded to the top 10 students on our course. New Designers having a limited amount of spaces was a great incentive for me to really push myself and my work as far as possible in order to achieve a place on the trip. I was very keen to display my work amongst the best graduates across the UK in London. This was important for my confidence and a sense of achievement at the end of my degree.

Speaking about his new role, James added: “I have settled into my new job really nicely due to the kindness and helpfulness of my work colleagues. I am really enjoying the role and can’t wait to become an established member of the team. I never thought TV and motion graphics were the route I was going to go down but now that this is the case, I am really happy it’s turned out this way.”

Pictured with James during his graduation ceremony at Swansea's Brangwyn Hall, UWTSD’s Donna Williams, course director BA Graphic Design said: “James Packer graduated with a first class honour degree. This was done with a great deal of determination and commitment. We are delighted that he has secured a full time position with Sky News. Competing against the top UK Graduates, James is loving his new home in London and his new career."
