UWTSD, Kier and Careers Wales host live working skills event at SA1

UWTSD and Kier Construction were pleased to welcome Careers Wales and year 11 pupils from Bishopston and Morriston Comprehensives to the university’s new £300 million SA1 Swansea Waterfont development.

It marked the first educational partnership to take place at the Waterfront development, aimed at teaching construction skills to pupils in a live working environment.

James Keetch, Kier Site manager, said : “These events offer school pupils the invaluable opportunity to experience potential career paths when they leave schools.  It was a hugely positive experience to see pupils being so enthusiastic and engaged in the activities undertaken on the day.”

Kay Dalton Marketing Co-ordinator, Careers Wales said:  "Through the Cynnydd Project, Careers Wales aims to develop links with local employers, such as Kier, to offer work tasters and more formal work experience opportunities.  We hope that the young people involved today will have gained an insight into what skills and qualifications are needed to gain employment locally.”

Mike Bessell, SA1 Project Manager said: ‘The University’s exciting SA1 Swansea Waterfront development is providing considerable opportunities in the region, ranging from promoting educational initiatives, through to generating economic opportunities for local businesses.  Initiatives such as the event held with Careers Wales provide a unique opportunity for local school pupils to learn about the fantastic pathways in the construction industry, and also to work alongside some of the project’s local subcontractors.”

UWTSD’s new £300 million SA1 Swansea Waterfront development in the heart of SA1 will provide a new home for the Faculties of Architecture, Computing and Engineering and Education and Communities, together with a new Library Building, when it opens in September 2018. Kier has been appointed to oversee the design and build of phase one of the scheme
