UWTSD launch STEM Cymru Sixth Form Project 2017


The University of Wales Trinity Saint David welcomed students from schools and colleges in Swansea and Carmarthen last week. The students are participating in the Engineering Education Scheme Wales & STEMCymru’s EESW Sixth Form Project, which is run in collaboration with industry partners.

EESW has received funding from the European Social Fund through the Welsh European Funding Office to provide opportunities and activities for schools and colleges in West Wales & the Valleys. Students came from local schools and colleges, including Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bryn Tawe, Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr, Ysgol Maes y Dderwen and Coleg Sir Gâr. They will be working in small groups in collaboration with partners from industries to complete an industry-based project which they will be presenting at a special event in 2018. Graham Howe, Head of School of Engineering, Manufacturing and Logistics at UWTSD, said: “It’s always a pleasure to welcome students to UWTSD for the EESW Stem Cymru scheme. Each year, the quality of the work they produce is excellent which is a tribute to the time and effort put in by the schools, the industry partners, and of course the students themselves. I’m looking forward to seeing what they produce.”

Pamela Berry, EESW West Wales Coordinator, said: “The scheme enables young people to gain experience of working with a professional company to gain practical skills, project management, team work and presentation skills. Employers and universities value these skills.”

This year, the university is pleased to be welcoming companies who operate in the South Wales area, including Tata Steel, Calsonic Kansei Europe, Tidal Lagoon Power, and Power & Water. Each industry will be working in close partnership with an assigned group, setting them an engineering brief based on a real industrial problem. The students will be required to research and design a solution as well as producing a final proposal, a report and a prototype. Students will attend a three-day workshop in December before submitting a written report in February. They will then present their work to a panel of assessors in April, where awards will be presented to the best work. Graham Howe said: “We’re very pleased to welcome Power and Water, Tata Steel, Tidal Lagoon, and Calsonic Kansei Europe to the university to guide the students through their projects. As a university, our priority is making sure that our students graduate with the skills that employers are looking for, both academic and practical. This scheme gives the students a taste of what an engineering degree at UWTSD can provide you with. It’s a particular pleasure to be working with companies who are based in the south west Wales area as we have excellent relationships with local industries and are always keen for students to benefit from this in every way possible.”

The Scheme is designed to provide students who are interested in pursuing a career in engineering with experience of working to a live brief, as well as the opportunity to implement practical skills to a theoretical problem. Students who take part in the scheme are typically in the first year of Sixth Form and are usually studying maths and science at AS Level. The experiences they gain give them many advantages for the future and is designed as an introduction to the career opportunities available in engineering. Pamela Berry said: “Critically there is a national shortage of engineers and the project enables young people to discover the exciting opportunities within the sector and possibly destroy some myths of what is required in being an engineer.”

UWTSD’s Faculty of Architecture, Applied Computing and Engineering is a multi-disciplinary faculty that covers architecture, automotive and motorsport engineering, construction, computing, electronics, environmental management, logistics, and mechanical and manufacturing engineering. Many courses offered by the Faculty also offer professional accreditations meaning that students gain both a degree and a professional qualification on completing their course.
