UWTSD sisters graduate on the same day

Two sisters have graduated from University Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) on the same day after both being awarded a BA (Hons) Early Childhood, from the School of Early Years at the University’s Carmarthen campus.

Sabina Begum Miah, aged 21 and Salihah Miah, aged 22, attended St Helen’s Primary, Olchfa Comprehensive and Gower College, Swansea, where they studied for a two-year Foundation Degree course together.

Sabina said: "I never expected to graduate with my sister and it’s been a really fun experience . Having assignments to do, being able to discuss the course and just having someone to share the university experience together has been amazing. I realised I wanted to become a teacher during my second year when I went out on placement and enjoyed it and thought, yes, this is definitely something I want to do. Throughout the course our parents have been 100 per cent supportive of us.”

Salihah, who also completed an access to nursing course at Gower College, Swansea said: "I would really like to go into the health side of things. I thought I could start with a base and get experience with young children and working in schools has given me that experience. I eventually want to be a paediatrician and this course has helped me a lot to start looking into that particular field. I have just secured a place at Bristol University, so in September it’s back to uni, where I will be studying to be a children’s nurse. The hands-on support we have both received from UWTSD has been amazing. The course has helped us develop. For someone who wants to work with young children, this course is ideal and will really help those who also want to progress and look into a health-related career too."

UWTSD’s Dr Glenda Tinney, a senior lecturer in the School of Early Years, Faculty of Education and Communities, said: "It was a delight to us at the School of Early Years to welcome both Sabina and Salihah on to our level 6 top up. They joined us in September 2016 in order to top up their Foundation Degree and study for a BA (Hons) Early Childhood.  It is wonderful to see both sisters graduating together after their hard work. I am sure their families are very proud of this double achievement.

“The level 6 top up route can be studied in the day in Carmarthen or in the evening in Townhill, Swansea and can be accessed by those who already have a Foundation degree or equivalent linked to early years. The top up explores all aspects of early years education and care and develops student expertise in leadership, inclusion, wellbeing, sustainability and citizenship to build on previous knowledge. We wish both sisters well in their chosen careers.”
