World premiere performance at The Annual Vice Chancellor's Christmas Concert

The annual Vice Chancellor’s Christmas Concert has taken place at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s Carmarthen Campus.

This year’s concert included the world premiere of - ‘Y Pêr Ganiedydd’ - a new piece by Eilir Owen Griffiths to commemorate the 300 year anniversary since the birth of hymnist William Williams, Pantyclenyn.

The concert also featured performances by students from the University’s Wales International Academy of Voice (WIAV); UWTSD’s Cardiff-based Canolfan Berfformio Cymru and former student Rhodri Prys Jones (Tenor).

The concert featured a range of Christmas classics with the British Sinfonietta accompanying the evening under the baton of Gareth Jones.

Conducted by UWTSD lecturer and leading Choral Director and Composer, Eilir Owen Griffiths, the concert is now a firm festive favourite in Carmarthen.

The event provides the University’s talented students the opportunity to showcase their musical abilities in the charming surroundings of the chapel.

“The annual Vice-Chancellor’s Christmas concert is a great opportunity for the students to perform with one of the UK’s leading professional orchestras and to highlight the wealth of talent we have within the University.” says Eilir, music lecturer and course leader for the popular Welsh medium performance course - BA Perfformio.

"The audience also had the opportunity to hear y ‘Pêr Ganiedydd’ - a piece I’ve composed to mark the 300 year anniversary since the birth of hymnist William Williams, Pantycelyn. There is no doubt that William Williams Pantycelyn is one of our most prominent figures not just because of his contribution to the Methodist reformation and the 900 hymns that he wrote but also his  contribution towards the cultural and educational life and development of Wales.

“I was keen to pay my own tribute and I’m extremely pleased that this piece of music will be heard for the first time during this concert.  I always look forward to this occasion.”

Students from the renowned Wales International Academy of Voice sang a range of classical Christmas songs with students from the BA Perfformio course singing a selection of songs from the Stephen Sondheim classic, Sweeney Todd which they’ll be performing at the Gate Arts Centre in Cardiff later this month.
