UWTSD's Swansea College of Art celebrates its strong reputation in design for textile and fashion.

Another cohort of Surface Pattern Design students have graduated from UWTSD’s Swansea College of Art.

They benefitted from an impressive range opportunities to work within industry, having completed a series of live briefs, participated in a project with H&M and attended industry event New Designers in London.

Some of this year’s graduates won the chance to do a paid internship at retail giant H&M’s headquarters in Stockholm last summer, an opportunity that would not have been available without the college’s strong presence at New Designers.

Megan Thomas was one of the students who spent her summer in Stockholm, working at H&M last year. She said: “I’m excited for the next step but I’m really going to miss being in the studio here. H&M was obviously a highlight but so was the ‘Heirlooms’ exhibition in the Mission Gallery in Swansea. New Designers also went really well. It was a lot of work but it’s such a good way to make contact with people in the industry.”

Bethan Davies also graduated this year. She reflected back on her time at H&M headquarters, saying: “It’s been such a good experience, I’m really glad I’ve done it. I’m looking forward to see where the future takes me now. The lecturers are amazing, this course is so good.”

Surface Pattern Degrees offer students an exciting opportunity to study in a thriving Faculty of Art and Design. It is designed to meet the demands of both students and employers by providing an expansive approach to the study and practice of Surface Pattern Design.

The Programmes have an enviable range of digital equipment and facilities including luxurious computer suites, laser cutters and engravers, digital textile printers, a digital embroiderer and water jet cutter. The non-digital equipment is equally impressive with full facilities for dyeing, screen printing, stitch, metalwork and much more. In addition to this, students have their own personal space in a lively, light and airy studio accommodating all three years of the course.
