Couple celebrate with their young daughter

Toni Hume and Dion Mitchell-Lewis are both graduating today with a BA in Education Studies: Primary. But they gained more than a degree during their time at UWTSD – they found love and more recently, welcomed a daughter, Betsan into the world.

Toni & Dion

“Dion and I met on the course as we were seated near each other. Nearly a year later, we found out I was pregnant. It was a huge shock, however as our daughter was due to be born during the Christmas period, we decided to persevere with our studies,” says Toni.

“We managed with the support of family and took it in turns to study. I personally have always wanted to work with children and this course provides so much access to do so. Dion also wants to peruse a career to work with children that need additional support and again, this course helps us as individuals do that.

“I am due to start my first post graduate job in two weeks in a brand new nursery and wish to do my PGCE in the future. We are both delighted to be graduating together - it has been a long and hard road but we wouldn't change a thing.”

Lynwen Roberts, Programme Director of the BA Education Studies: Primary at UWTSD is very pleased to see the couple graduating today.

“Toni & Dion met as students on our programme in 2015. They then became a couple and their daughter was born during their studies. We are very proud of both Toni and Dion, and congratulate them on their academic success. We wish them well in their future careers and as parents to the lovely Betsan as they graduate together in 2018.”

Congratulations Toni, Dion and Betsan - we wish you all a happy and successful future
