Excitement builds ahead of UWTSD Swansea Triathlon in SA1 on May 20

Excitement is building ahead of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David Swansea Triathlon, on May 20, with staff and students in training for the event, which gets under way at our new £300million SA1 Swansea Waterfront development.

UWTSD is once again the main sponsor of the event, which is organised by Activity Wales Events. University staff and students from the Schools of Sport, Health and Outdoor Education and Tourism and Hospitality will be taking part, volunteering and providing activities at the triathlon, alongside 2,000 competitors.

The Swansea Triathlon has presented a fantastic opportunity for UWTSD students to gain real-life work experience of working with clients striving to achieve a goal. Members of staff who expressed a desire to enter the triathlon were allocated a student Personal Trainer from the Schools of Sport, Health and Outdoor Education, who designed and delivered a training programme to prepare the client for the triathlon. The students have been so engaged by the challenge that a number have opted to attempt the triathlon alongside their clients, in order to share in the experience.

UWTSD Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science, Geraint Forster said: “The partnership with Activity Wales Events has provided fantastic opportunities for students to gain vital vocational experience in a real-life setting. Sport and Exercise Science students have the opportunity to train members of University staff who wish to participate in their first triathlon. This opportunity is tied in to one of their first year modules - Personal Training.

"One student currently in his second year not only trained his client for the triathlon during the module last year, but has continued to train the client privately since then. As a result of this experience, he has now gained part-time employment alongside his studies working with a local cycling/triathlon training company, who intend to take him on permanently after he graduates.”

Jacqui Jones, Programme Director and Senior Lecturer - Leisure, Events Tourism and Travel Management at UWTSD’s Swansea’s School of Tourism and Hospitality added: “Last year our Events Management and International Hotel Management students ran the VIP provision at the event. The students met and greeted invited guests, informing them about the event as well as running the hospitality facilities. Working in partnership with Marriott Hotels, the students already have events and hospitality experience and skills so this is was an excellent opportunity for them to further develop their skills set.”

UWTSD Professor Medwin Hughes, DL, Vice-Chancellor said: “We are delighted once again to be the main sponsor of the Swansea Triathlon. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a major new sporting event in the heart of the city centre where we are developing our SA1 Swansea Waterfront development – to create a learning-centred neighbourhood for the University and for our academic, business and cultural partners.

“The University is keen to act as an engine for growth and prosperity across the region aiming to attract through its activities at SA1, both inward investment and collaboration with commercial enterprise and creative industry partners.”

Scott Powell, Activity Wales Events Race Director said: “We are delighted to be working alongside the University of Wales Trinity Saint David to bring this event to Swansea for the third year running.

"The partnership creates a vast number of opportunities for students from a range of disciplines to get involved, and gives them first-hand experience in the fields which they're training.

“We have TV coverage confirmed for the event, meaning both the University and Swansea will get global exposure, and help to bring greater numbers to the city across the board.

“It’s an exciting partnership to be involved with. We are also delighted to have secured the support from UWTSD for a further 3 years which will mean we can target attracting a world triathlon series event to be included in the programme which will bring the worlds top triathletes to the city.  We are also delighted to announce that Swansea bid will also continue with a music festival on the main stage in castle square the day before the triathlon.  It’s very exciting to combine arts with sport securing the triathlons standing as one of the major events of the year.”
