University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s Swansea College of Art are celebrating another successful week at New Designers in London.

Graphic Design students

Nick Thatcher, who has just completed a BSc (Hons) Product Design & Technology, was awarded the Innovate-Ingenuity Award.

Nick said: “I’m so surprised, no idea that would happen, the course has been loads of fun but hard work, after all the buzz of the third year and now this... might have a go at the ball-bike land speed record during my Masters!”

Dr Pete Spring Senior Lecturer and MA Portfolio Director said: “We’re so proud of all our graduates but this is amazing and just adds to the quality and potential for both the graduates going in to employment as valuable designers but also as inspiration to new students joining us in September or thinking about which university to choose”.

Students from BA Graphic Design were also celebrating. BA Graphic Design student Jonathan Williams was awarded the prestigious Science Museum First prize. He was also a runner up for the ‘Shout Out Creative Talent from Pentland’ and a ‘Love your work’ from MoonPig.

Donna Williams, Course Director of BA Graphic Design, said: “Jon is a well-deserved winner. He has been an exceptional student with a diverse, exciting and skilled portfolio. We are absolutely delighted that he has been acknowledged and noticed for his talent. Jon took every opportunity to use all the fantastic facilities at Swansea College of Art UWTSD. Job offers are now flying in around us. As a University, we work very closely with all of our students. It has been wonderful for many of our Graduates who are receiving lots of interest and offers from high profile companies. Some of which, are only choosing to interview students from Swansea College of Art. We are extremely excited and happy for our soon to be Graduates.”

Jon said: “I am overwhelmed by all the industry interest. They have all said such positive comments about my portfolio, the course and other student’s work. They have focused on the relevance to the subject and depth of creativity. I’ve loved every minute of my time at Swansea. So happy to be graduating with a first from this personalised course.”

Gabriella Bond also had a ‘runner up’ for the Science Museum Award. Two students from one course is fantastic achievement. She had an excellent interview and the science museum commented on her articulate understanding of her meaningful design outcomes.

Rebecca Rees also had a ‘love your work’ from MoonPig. Rebecca said: “I am having the best time and getting compliments from industry which is boosting my confidence. Onwards and upwards to interviews! I am so happy that I was chosen to come to New Designers and that I chose to come to Swansea to study for my Degree. It has been an amazing experience”
