A major international publication which focuses on Indo-Roman trade relations has been launched at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David this month.

 Cobb Launch

Rome and the Indian Ocean Trade from Augustus to the Early Third Century CE by Dr Matthew Cobb is the output of a decade’s worth of research. In this book, Dr Cobb explores the development of commercial exchanges between the Mediterranean world and civilisations in East Africa, Southern Arabia and the India from the Augustan period to the early third century CE. Among the issues considered are the identities of those involved, how they organised and financed themselves, the challenges they faced (scheduling, logistics, threats of piracy and banditry, sailing conditions), and the types of goods they traded.

The official launch of the book was held at the Founders’ Library in Lampeter. Following the launch, Dr Matthew Cobb, Lecturer in Classics at UWTSD’s Lampeter campus said:

“It was great to have the opportunity to celebrate the culmination of a decade’s worth of research with my students who I have taught over the last several years, along with my colleagues and members of the public.

I’m delighted with the interest shown in this publication so far and it was very pleasing to see so many people attend the event. It was a very successful evening and I’d like to thank everybody that supported and contributed towards the evening’s success.”
