Matthew Heath celebrates with a First

Matthew Heath, a mature student at UWTSD’s Carmarthen campus, is today celebrating having graduated with a first class BSc honours degree in Sport and Exercise Science (Outdoor Fitness).

Matthew Heath

Matt embarked on his degree course during his mid-thirties, having had a range of jobs including a period in the Army. He had recently developed an interest in fitness and triathlon, and was interested in starting a career in this field.

“I chose to come and study at UWTSD when I saw BSc Outdoor Fitness advertised in an outdoors magazine when I was helping my parents through their cancer treatments,” says Matthew.

“I decided to have a career change and pursue a career in an area which I enjoyed - outdoor adventure, fitness and health - as you never know what life will throw at you, it’s never too late to learn!

“From an engineering and practical based background the BSc Sport and Exercise Science degree has developed and essential understanding of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and psychology which I knew nothing about prior to starting the degree. My desire to learn and understand how the body functions has seen me excel and finish a majority of these modules with 1st class marks. This has set me up to further my education by accepting a place on an Exercise Physiology Masters programme.

“My future career aspirations are to help individuals improve health and wellbeing through exercise and sport. My MSc programme will also open up opportunities to work in elite level sports which I am very excited about.”

Since commencing the course, Matthew has completed an Ironman Triathlon, gained an internship with Swim Wales as a Strength and Conditioning coach working with academy swimmers, and has become a qualified gym instructor and Personal Trainer.

Geraint Forster, Programme Director of the BSc Sport and Exercise course at UWTSD says: “Matthew joined us at UWTSD having been out of education for over 15 years and having had careers in both the military and civilian life. He was looking to establish himself in a career that he felt passionate about and therefore chose the Sport and Exercise Science (Outdoor Fitness) course as he had a passion for fitness and triathlon.

“It has been a pleasure to see Matt develop throughout his degree, from having to re-acquaint himself with studying skills in the first year, to producing work of a first-class standard by his third year - his dissertation in particular was outstanding. Alongside his studies, Matt has gained significant practical experience such as working as a strength and conditioning intern with Swim Wales, coaching academy swimmers.”

“Matt is a prime example of a mature student who a few years ago might not have considered himself to have been the academic type, but is now graduating with a first-class honours degree, and going on to study an MSc at Loughborough University. This just shows what can be achieved through finding a subject you are passionate about, and working hard.”
