Pushing the boundaries in Coaching and Mentoring

13.12.2018

Voice Workshop Ltd has recently benefited from the pioneering innovation of UWTSD’s Work Based Learning team who delivered three stimulating days of coaching and mentoring to twenty singing teachers on the MA Professional Practice (Voice Pedagogy).

Annette Fillery-Travis, senior coach, researcher and author was accompanied by Mair O’Connor who is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Professional Development and together they taught both theory and practical skills to a group of eager learners.

Amongst the lively cohort was Dr Jenevora Williams who is the UK’s leading expert in teaching young voices. ‘It’s already began to shape my practice,” said Jenevora. “As teachers of voice, it’s so easy to over-instruct. I now talk less, listen more and engage students in their own problem solving. I’m in the early stages of researching this area and I’m keen to see where it leads. I’m already making links with other perspectives in pedagogy.”

Director of Voice Workshop, Deborah Winter said:  “It really is an exciting development as it is enabling teachers to consider their practice through a new lens. It will be interesting to see how they embed the work into their own practice.”

Annette Fillery-Travis said: "This is an excellent example of how Coaching and mentoring can provide real benefit to all professionals. It was great to see these students at the Coaching and mentoring in the workplace conference in Swansea on the 28th November!”

The Wales Institute for Work Based Learning has recently teamed up with a leading education provider Voice Workshop to provide a new MA Professional Practice (Voice Pedagogy). This MA is designed specifically for singing teachers seeking a better understanding of voice science, acoustics, neuroscience and teaching pedagogy. It is staffed by leading voice practitioners and academics such as Dr Jenevora Williams, Professor David Howard, ENT laryngologist Natalie Watson and Dr Jane Oakland.
