Returning to learn pays dividends

Ryan Peters is today celebrating having graduated with a BA in Education Studies: Primary (Welsh medium) at UWTSD.

Ryan Peters

“Five years ago, I sat in the Halliwell Theatre on UWTSD’s Carmarthen campus watching my wife graduate with a First class degree in Early Years. I remember feeling incredibly proud and inspired! She had studied full time, whilst also working full time and being a full time mother, to our two children. At the time, I had a very successful career in the hospitality industry. However, I was ready for a change after 13 years of working very long days.

“After leaving school, I went straight into full time employment. Could I undergo such a drastic change as returning to education?! I decided to take a leap of faith, and enrolled on to the Welsh medium BA Astudiaethau Addysg: Cynradd (BA Education Studies: Primary) course, and left my career in hospitality. I was afraid of the change. I was afraid of losing something good, but I gained something even better!

“Returning to education after 13 years was always going to be daunting. However, UWTSD quickly became like a second home to me. The support network is second to none. The sense of community is encouraging and I was guided every step of the way. Opportunities were readily available and I quickly applied to become a Student Ambassador. This was the beginning of a very exciting journey.

“Having undertaken this role, I later applied to join the university's marketing team full time as a Senior Schools and Colleges Liaison Officer, and after a period of time in that position, I was later appointed as a Senior Reaching Wider Officer for the Reaching Wider South West Wales Partnership. My course gave me the flexibility to be able to pursue these exciting opportunities, and for that I will be eternally grateful. I was able to use the theories discussed during lectures and put these into practice in my roles. Raising a family, working and studying full time has been a challenge, but the rewards have far outweighed the challenge itself!

“Difficult roads always lead to beautiful destinations, and I arrived at UWTSD - what a destination!”

Ryan Peter & Family

Lynwen Roberts, Programme Director of the BA Education Studies: Primary at UWTSD is delighted to see Ryan graduating today.

“Ryan is a brilliant example of what can be achieved by mature students. His commitment to both the programme and the university have been of the highest level from the very beginning. Ryan's academic work has always been of the highest standard even, even though he's worked during the course - in the first instance as a student ambassador and more recently, as a member of staff at UWTSD. Huge congratulations to Ryan on his academic achievement, we're very proud.”
