Students awarded first and second place for research at London College of Music Conference

Two students on the MA Professional Practice (Voice Pedagogy) course have been awarded 1st and 2nd prize for their research posters at the London College of Music Conference. The focus of the conference was Core Competencies for Teaching Singing within Higher Education.

First prize was awarded to Kate Cubley for her innovative research on balance and posture. Her small-scale, pilot study found that her postural acronym Stealthy Balance and practice based exercises had a positive impact on her singing students both during and after the singing lessons took place. Kate is no stranger to giving research presentations, she recently showcased her work at the Voice Geek Conference and she was nominated for the prestigious BVA, Van Lawrence Voice Prize.

In second place, Juliet Russell presented her work on working with COPD/Asthma patients. Her research resulted in the creation of a tool-kit now used by the British Lung Foundation’s ‘Singing for Breathing’ Initiative. As well as coaching on both The Voice and the Michael McIntyre show, Juliet is a trainer for the British Lung Foundation and her training is being implemented on a national level.

The MA programme specialising in voice is part of a collaborative approach with Voice Workshop Ltd and UWTSD's Wales Institute for Work-Based Learning.

Director Deborah Winter said: “I was so proud that our students secured the top prizes. Both projects were outstanding and it was a real pleasure to see them shine.”

The Head of The Welsh Institute for Work Based Learning, Annette Fillery- Travis said: “We are delighted for these students and this honour clearly reflects the high quality of the work within this programme. Work based learning has allowed these students work WITHIN their practice to be fully recognised and count towards their MA.”
