Swansea College of Art hosts demonstration of Sony's Sonic Surf VR

UWTSD’s Swansea College of Art was proud to host a demonstration of Sony’s Sonic Surf VR.

Students on Music courses were able to try out the system which combines state-of-the-art audio processing with an advanced multi-channel speaker technology to create spatial, dynamic soundscapes. It allows the user to position individual sound sources to enhance what’s happening on screen, creating a dynamic sense of movement without headphones, with sounds that appear to move convincingly across, around or towards the listener. Audio is remarkably crisp, clear and lifelike thanks to the advanced multi-speaker array and powerful digital processing.

UWTSD’s Simon Kilshaw, Programme Director for Music Technology said: "To have Sony’s pioneering immersive sound system installed in the Music Technology department was an amazing experience for our students. For us to learn to produce and perform with the 96 array speaker system and to bring the fabulous acoustics of the BBC Hall alive here at the University was an unforgettable technical and aesthetic experience for us all.

It was also an incredible opportunity for the public to have the chance to come and experience this unforgettably immersive Sound System here in Swansea."

Caroline Thraves, Head of School of Fine and Media Arts said: "Students have benefited from this learning experience enormously. Our link with Sony provides students with exceptional industry insights."
