Swansea College of Art Professor Sue Williams to showcase solo exhibition

UWTSD’s Swansea College of Art Professor Sue Williams will showcase her solo exhibition called ‘My cherry bomb’ at Studio 18 in Pontycymmer from June 9 to 30.

The exhibition features Professor Williams’ latest body of large-scale paintings on canvas. Akin to pages from a visual diary, and published for all to see, her characteristically bold and immediate paintings tell of awkward encounters, sticky situations and erotic experiences. Issues of sexual communication, dysfunction and human frailty are imbedded in her work; themes which are explored and executed with such truthfulness and raw honesty.

The exhibition will showcase for the first time, a newly developed print folio, called Love Hearts, produced in conjunction with the print market project, Cardiff. The prints are monochrome and intimate in scale, reminiscent of the Victorian-era’s erotic miniatures, the viewer becomes a voyeur -  a position which is perhaps more familiar in today’s digitally dependent world.

Professor Williams was born in Cornwall and has lived and made her career in Wales over the last twenty years. She is a senior lecturer at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and a prominent artist with a recognised body of work and an exhibition history of both solo and group shows on five continents. In 2000 she was awarded a gold medal for fine art at both the National Eisteddfod and the Rootstein Hopkins Foundation award for painting.  In 2005 she was one of eight shortlisted artists for the second biennial Artes Mundi prize.
