UWTSD appoints Director of Canolfan S4C Yr Egin

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David has today announced that Carys Ifan has been appointed as Director of Canolfan S4C Yr Egin - the University’s new creative and digital centre that will open in September.

Having worked in the creative industries for twenty years, Carys is an experienced Producer who has led as well as instigated a number of large-scale projects in the film, television and theatre industries.  Carys has also worked on a range of digital and multi-media projects and was also instrumental in establishing a popular music festival.

Originally from St Dogmaels, Carys worked in the creative industries in Cardiff for many years before moving with her family to Llangrannog and continuing to work on a wide range of creative projects across Wales.

Most recently, Carys has played a leading role as the producer of some of Wales's most exciting events including curating the Y Bont multi-platform event for Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru in Abertystwyth – a project that was a combination of a live promenade drama, a social media event and a television production.

Carys also organises the Nôl a Mla'n festival in Llangrannog that this year celebrates its tenth anniversary and has become a well-established event in Wales’ national music calendar. She has also worked internationally on the Literary Europe Live project with the Mercator Institute for Media, Languages ​​and Culture

"I'm extremely excited to have such a wonderful opportunity to lead on the work of Canolfan S4C Yr Egin and to develop a creative cluster and create an environment for ideas, companies and communities to develop and flourish," says Carys Ifan.

"The collaboration, communication and interaction between tenants, the community and the University will be key to developing experimental, relevant and ambitious content and to ensure that content from Wales not only benefits diverse audiences but also creates the opportunities needed to meet their needs - both at home and around the world," adds Carys.

Speaking of Carys Ifan’s appointment, Gwilym Dyfri Jones, Associate Pro Vice Chancellor at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David said: “The University greatly welcomes the appointment of Carys Ifan. She has extensive and relevant experience of working within a range of creative contexts in Wales as well as organising major cultural events and festivals. Through her enthusiasm, her broad understanding of the creative industries as well as her extensive connections, we look forward to seeing Carys bringing her vision to life and establishing Yr Egin as a new creative and digital centre for Wales."

Yr Egin – the University’s new digital and media centre in Carmarthen – is a transformational development that will be home to S4C’s main headquarters as well as a number of companies and organisations working with the creative and digital industries.

Yr Egin will also be a centre that will be at the heart of the community providing opportunities for local people to enjoy the building and its resources - a cafe, auditorium and performance areas.  Construction started in March 2017 and the centre will open this September.

Carys Ifan started in her role as Director of Canolfan S4C Yr Egin this week.
