UWTSD celebrates successful Swansea Triathlon 2018 partnership

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David Swansea Triathlon 2018 has taken place in SA1 with staff and students taking part alongside 1,500 competitors.

UWTSD was once again the main sponsor of the event, which is organised by Activity Wales Events and takes place annually in SA1, where the university is building a new home for the Faculty of Architecture, Computing and Engineering, Yr Athrofa, UWTSD's Institute of Education and a new library. SA1 Swansea Waterfront will also be home to the Construction Wales Innovation Centre and will welcome its first students in August.

The Swansea Triathlon has presented a fantastic opportunity for UWTSD students to gain real-life work experience of working with clients striving to achieve a goal. Members of staff who expressed a desire to enter the triathlon were allocated a student Personal Trainer from the Schools of Sport, Health and Outdoor Education, who designed and delivered an eight-week training programme to prepare the client for the triathlon. The students have been so engaged by the challenge that a number have opted to attempt the triathlon alongside their clients, in order to share in the experience.

UWTSD Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science, Geraint Forster said: “The partnership with Activity Wales Events has provided fantastic opportunities for students to gain vital vocational experience in a real-life setting. Sport and Exercise Science students have the opportunity to train members of University staff who wish to participate in their first triathlon. This opportunity is tied in to one of their first year modules - Personal Training.

“One student currently in his second year not only trained his client for the triathlon during the module last year but has continued to train the client privately since then. As a result of this experience, he has now gained part-time employment alongside his studies working with a local cycling/triathlon training company, who intend to take him on permanently after he graduates.”

UWTSD Professor Medwin Hughes, DL, Vice-Chancellor said: “We are delighted once again to be the main sponsor of the Swansea Triathlon. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a major new sporting event in the heart of the city centre where we are developing our SA1 Swansea Waterfront development – to create a learning-centred neighbourhood for the University and for our academic, business and cultural partners.

"The University is keen to act as an engine for growth and prosperity across the region aiming to attract through its activities at SA1, both inward investment and collaboration with commercial enterprise and creative industry partners.”

Scott Powell, Activity Wales Events Race Director said: “We are delighted to be working alongside the University of Wales Trinity Saint David to bring this event to Swansea for the third year running. The partnership creates a vast number of opportunities for students from a range of disciplines to get involved, and gives them first-hand experience in the fields which they're training.”
