UWTSD hosts annual regional ‘Spelling Bee’ competition

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David recently hosted the annual I:Spell, a regional ‘Spelling Bee’ competition for Year 7 pupils across South West Wales.

Organised by the South West Wales Reaching Wider Partnership, in association with UWTSD, this year’s contest saw 16 teams from the area coming together to compete to be crowned I:Spell champions.

The main aim of the event is to encourage pupils to engage with ‘English’ in a fun way and to promote the essential literacy skills that enable young people to reach their potential.

“It was great to see so many teams enter I:Spell 2018, with all pupils engaged and giving a 100% during the event and was an absolute pleasure to see the pupils enthusiastic about their spelling,” says Ryan Peters, Senior Reaching Wider Officer at UWTSD who organised the event.

Teams from Coedcae School and Ysgol Gyfun Y Strade, in Llanelli; Ysgol Gyfun Maes Y Gwendraeth in Cefneithin; Pembroke School, as well as Pentrehafod School and Ysgol Gyfun Bryn Tawe in Swansea competed against each other during a fun-packed day on the University’s campus in Carmarthen.

It was a close competition throughout the day, ending with a nailbiting final between Coedcae and Pentrehafod schools. Huge congratulations to Noah, Joseph, Vaughan, Finley and Freddie from Coedcae School, who became I:Spell 2018 champions! We very much look forward to organising and hosting I:Spell 2019, and welcome any new participants to join in the challenge,” adds Ryan.

I:Spell is designed around the English curriculum and the Writing across the curriculum strand of the National Literacy and Numeracy Framework (LNF) with resources made available to all schools wishing to compete.  This allows all teams taking part to familiarise themselves with all aspects of the competition before the event.

Staff and pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day with one competitor stating: “During the day, I learned to never give up and to keep aiming high! It was fun and intense. I would highly recommend it – and that’s with one c and two m’s!!!
