UWTSD secures funding to create a Digital Performance Lab in Carmarthen

15.06.2018

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) has been awarded a sum of £125,382 by the Rural Community Development Fund (RCDF) to develop a digital performance lab at the University’s Halliwell Centre providing an accessible centre of excellence for digital technologies that will help serve local businesses, the wider community as well as the education sector.

This project has received funding through the Welsh Government Rural Communities - Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government.

The aim of the Digital Performance Lab is to maximise the social and economic benefit of S4C’s relocation to Carmarthen as the channel prepares to move its headquarters to Canolfan S4C Yr Egin this September.

Yr Egin is the University’s new digital and media centre in Carmarthen and is a transformational development that will be home to S4C’s main headquarters as well as a number of companies and organisations working with the creative and digital industries.

Yr Egin will also be a centre that will be at the heart of the community providing opportunities for local people to enjoy the building and its resources - a cafe, auditorium and performance areas.  Construction started in March 2017 and the centre will open this September.

In anticipation of the opening of Yr Egin on UWTSD’s Carmarthen campus, the University is enhancing the digital provision offered at the Halliwell Centre by installing the latest in screen technology and interactive devices.  This will allow a range of sectors, including businesses and the wider community to access facilities locally.

The upgrade will include an extensive fibre optic and digital network infrastructure, enabling multiple high speed HD video and audio connections and ensuring that the Halliwell Centre has the digital capacity to hold ambitious exhibitions and virtual conferencing.

An experimental performance space will also be created allowing the Halliwell to be used in a variety of flexible and adaptable ways.

“The development of the Digital Lab on UWTSD’S Carmarthen campus is an exciting project that will help pave the way for the opening of Yr Egin – the University’s creative and digital centre that opens this autumn,” says Gwilym Dyfri Jones, Associate Pro Vice Chancellor at UWTSD.

“The upgrading of the popular Halliwell Centre will mean that we have yet another innovative space on our campus, complementing the facilities that will be offered at Yr Egin.  The enhancement of the IT and AV systems within the Halliwell and will mean that the University will be able to provide local businesses and communities a technologically advanced and flexible space that can be used in various ways - including as an exhibition area, a conference facility, a performance space or as a cinema.

“We are extremely grateful to the RCDF for their support and are looking forward to seeing the Halliwell Centre supporting Yr Egin’s wider vision of engaging a host of communities as it works to build a creative and digital cluster in Carmarthenshire.”

Yr Egin aims to transform, support and shape the creative and digital industries in South West Wales and beyond as well as becoming a hub for the local community.  There will be a specific focus on broadcasting and performance on the ground floor, with a range of offices for S4C and other partners on the other two floors.  The University will also create new enterprise incubation units, offering access to opportunities, facilities, events and industry networks.

This exciting development, along with the upgraded facilities offered at the Halliwell Centre will help to ensure that Carmarthenshire’s local communities – be they businesses, schools or interest groups – will be able to access state-of-the-art facilities to help them develop and grow.
