UWTSD students present ‘Into The Woods’

26.03.2018

Students from the Welsh medium BA Perfformio (Performance) course at UWTSD are preparing to bring their next show - Stephen Sondheim’s classic, Into The Woods – to Carmarthen this week.

Into The Woods

Into the Woods is an epic fairy-tale about wishes, family and the choices we make and this production is being directed by American director, Brock Roberts.

This musical is a Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine classic with them taking everyone's favourite Brothers Grimm characters and bringing them together for a timeless yet relevant piece.  The Tony Award-winning show is a rare modern masterpiece that features a book and a score that are both enchanting and touching.

The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.

The students taking part in the production are all studying the Welsh-medium BA Perfformio (Performance) course at UWTSD based at The Gate Arts Centre in Cardiff.  The fundamental ethos of the programme is to provide a solid technique along with a broad understanding of the creative industries in Wales and beyond.

Given the very practical nature of the degree, students receive a range of opportunities to perform and show their progress on a regular basis – and this is another example of the students benefiting from interesting and varied opportunities to perform and develop skills that will prepare them for the world of musical theatre.

Established by the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in Cardiff in 2015, the BA Perfformio is an innovative and progressive course taught intensively over a period of two years by a combination of staff from the University and experts working professionally in the fields of television, dance, entertainment, musicals and theatre.

Into The Woods

Students on the course make the most of every opportunity to collaborate with professional practitioners who offer them new and different experiences as performers and in preparing for this particular production, they’ve been fortunate enough to work with Ohio based director and lyric tenor, Brock Roberts.

Brock’s impressive directing credits include Carmen for Edinburgh Studio Opera and co-directing a Baroque double bill at Birmingham Conservatoire working with Michael Barry on John Blow's Venus and Adonis and Charpentier's Actéon. In 2016, he directed a semi-staged concert performance of Carmen at the Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod as well as the youth opera production of Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld at the Teatru Manoel in Malta. Brock also returned to Llangollen to assist, director Amy Lane, on the festival's semi-staged production of Tosca with Kristine Opolais, Kristian Benedikt and Sir Bryn Terfel and directed a new work, To Himself, Alone, at the Tête à Tête Festival.

Into The Woods offers our students an excellent opportunity not only to perform one of the greatest modern musicals but also to work with a director from the USA who’s making his mark on both sides of the Atlantic,” says Eilir Owen Griffiths, Director of the BA Perfformio course.

“Having experience of working with different directors from across the globe helps to broaden our students' horizons and to experience new ways of working. This has been a wonderful opportunity for our students and an experience they’ve really enjoyed,” continues Eilir.

“This is an enchanting musical that’s also thoroughly entertaining and we’re really looking forward to bringing the show to Carmarthen.”

You can see Into The Woods at the Halliwell Theatre on UWTSD Carmarthen’s campus at 7.30pm on Tuesday, March 27th and Wednesday, March 28th.  To book tickets, please go to http://www.thegate.org.uk
