UWTSD Tourism Masters Students host conference at the Senedd

UWTSD Tourism Masters students hosted their 2nd World’s Our Lecture Theatre Conference at the Senedd on March 19  - a unique event organised by students for students.

This year’s Conference was entitled Bringing The World To Wales and celebrated the opportunities offered by Cardiff Airport’s exciting new links with Qatar Airlines and the potential for opening up inbound Tourism with new markets in the  Middle East and Far East.

The Masters students recently travelled to Malaysia for an academic field trip where as well as visiting tourism venues and attractions in Kuala Lumpur and Penang including Air Asia, Royal Caribbean Cruiselines and The Eastern Oriental Hotel the group also spent time with UWTSD’s partners The International University of Malaya Wales. This was an inspiring trip for the students and the Conference enabled them to share their experiences with students from Colleges across South Wales in order to encourage more young people to consider careers in International Tourism

UWTSD’s Jacqui Jones, MA. Programme Director –Tourism & Hospitality / International Placement Tutor, said: “The students worked hard to secure the Senedd as an inspirational new venue and are very appreciative of the support they have been given by the National Assembly. They put together a range of interactive activities for the conference in order to involve  the participants in planning travel itineraries and tours for a group of Malaysian students travelling to Wales.”

The conference also included a number of short presentations from industry guest speakers, academics and alumni from the School of Tourism and Hospitality to provide the Tourism students of the future with a flavour of the exciting opportunities available within the rapidly expanding Tourism industry in Wales. This included keynote speaker Andrew Campbell, former head of UWTSD’s School of Tourism and Hospitality; Samantha Birdsell, Assistant General Manager at Cardiff’s Marriott Hotel, UWTSD Travel and Tourism graduate Ewan Rees, founder of VIP Wales; Abigail Kenvyn, Exhibition Manager at Royal Mint and UWTSD Travel and Tourism graduate Sophie Brew, who is about to take up a new position with the Dorchester Group.

The Event supporters were Ffos Las Race Course and Oakwood who sponsored prizes, Marriott Hotel Cardiff, VIP Wales and International University of Malaya Wales.
