WIAV perform at Radyr and Morganstown Festival

Students from the Wales International Academy of Voice are looking forward to performing at the Radyr and Morganstown Festival tomorrow.

Mezzo-Soprano Monique Simone and Tenor Henry Ngan will be performing, accompanied by repetiteur Llŷr Simon, at the festival which is being held in aid of Alzheimer’s Society Cymru. The concert will be held Friday 11th May in the Methodist Church in Raydr at 1pm. 

Dave Taylor, Academic Director at the Wales International Academy of Voice, said: “This is the fourth year that our students have performed as part of this lovely festival and we are delighted to be returning once again as part of our ongoing relationship with them. We hope the audience enjoy the performance!”

Monique Simone is a 23-year-old Australian/German Mezzo-soprano who has studied at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.  Recent career highlights include performing at Mark Coughlan's NYE Vienna Pops Concert at the Perth Concert Hall, and bringing Opera to remote communities in Broome and Derby as a soloist in Opera Under the Stars. Notable awards Monique has received include the North of Perth Music Festival’s Most Outstanding Senior Vocalist and Perth’s Royal Overseas League Award for Young Singers. In 2017, she enjoyed working with the West Australian Opera chorus in Tosca and The Merry Widow.

Born in Hong Kong, Henry Ngan graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and obtained his Master of Music in the Royal Northern College of Music. During his studies he received numerous scholarships including RNCM Scholarship Award, Sir Robert Black Trust Fund, Hong Kong Welsh Male Voice Choir Scholarship, The Hong Kong Children’s Choir Scholarship and Michael Rippon Memorial Scholarship. He also frequently participated in the Hong Kong School Music Festival and was the overall champion in Hong Kong Youth Singing Festival receiving the “Ella Kiang Trophy” and “HKYSF Scholarship.” Operatic engagements include performances with companies in the UK, Lyric Opera Studio Weimar in Germany, Opera Hong Kong and Musica Viva HK. Roles include Spoletta (Tosca), Remendado (Carmen), Tamino & Monostatos (Die Zauberflöte), Camille (The Merry Widow), Arturo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Ruiz (Il trovatore), Starveling (The Midsummer Night’s Dream), Prologue (The Turn of the Screw), Lucano & Soldato (L’incoronazione di Poppea). He has also participated in many productions including La Bohème, Madama Butterfly, Macbeth, Giovanna d’Arco, Simon Boccanegra, Otello, La Traviata, Cavalleria Rusticana, I Pagliacci and La Fille du Régiment. He has also been chosen to perform in concert with Italian Tenor Andrea Bocelli and The King’s Singers Concert.
