Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering Degree Apprenticeships Wales - Industry Liaison Breakfast Events on April 11 & 12

During the summer of 2019, Welsh Government will be releasing funding for the Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering Degree Apprenticeships being developed and delivered by the University of Wales Trinity Saint David at the University’s new SA1 Swansea Waterfront Development, from September 2019.

Degree apprentices in blue overalls control hydraulic manufacturing arms.

Degree apprenticeships are a great way to upskill your current employees, provide progression for your apprentices or to encourage new recruits to your organisation.  This programme allows your employees to study towards a full Bachelor’s degree, whilst applying new knowledge in the workplace and bring new skills into your business.

Academic provision for the Degree Apprenticeship is fully funded.

Apprenticeships will be available in the following areas:

  • Advanced Manufacturing Operations
  • Manufacturing Systems Engineering
  • Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering
  • Materials Science

The full Degree Apprenticeship will run over 4 years. However, students with appropriate prior qualifications or experience may be able to complete their studies over a shorter period.

Off-the-job academic study takes place over 42 weeks per year on Friday afternoons and evenings (1pm-7pm) at UWTSD’s SA1 Swansea Waterfront Development.

Apprentices are supported throughout their programme by a Training Adviser, who will visit the workplace regularly, and provide the link between the academic studies and workplace learning, and address any issues that may arise during the programme.

The University’s vision for SA1 Swansea Waterfront is to create a neighbourhood where collaboration and partnership is the key driver for teaching, learning and innovation. Together, with our partners we are developing new provision to address skills gaps, creating enterprise hubs and accelerator schemes to grow new businesses, developing the skills of current businesses and attracting new investment into the region.

Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering degree apprenticeships provide a unique opportunity to co-create with employers a programme of study that completely integrates academic study and practical application from the outset. Meaningful training linked to real career opportunities whilst achieving a postgraduate award is a tangible expression of the skills-pipeline at the heart of the SA1 Swansea Waterfront, where we are committed to developing creative, skilled and employable graduates.

Barry Liles, OBE, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Skills and Lifelong Learning) at UWTSD said: “As a provider of high level skills, we recognise the immense benefits to both our students and employers that can be achieved through advanced manufacturing and engineering degree apprenticeships. They are invaluable for preparing students with the skills and knowledge needed for industry – using a combination of expertise to upskill the talent pipeline for employers in Wales and beyond. We want to ensure that every student who walks through our doors, leaves with a skillset for life.”
