Ancient Civilisations graduate praises University of Wales Trinity Saint David for helping him overcome his dyslexia

A student who overcame dyslexia to achieve a BA in Ancient Civilisations has praised the support he received from staff at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in Lampeter.

Benjamin Andrews is now planning to continue his studies with a Master’s degree.

“Three years ago, I would never have considered this but thanks to the support of my tutors and student support I feel confident to continue with my studies,” he says.

As an undergraduate Ben lacked confidence in his abilities but determined to make the most of his studies at Lampeter.

“I felt that the course and the campus were perfect for me,” he says. “The quiet location was ideally suited for me, as was the course, which enabled me to study a vast array of ancient civilisations.

“This was further enhanced by the opportunity to be part of the 2018 archaeology trip to China, where I had the opportunity to see what I had been taught in class.”

His tutor Katharina Zinn, Senior Lecturer for Egyptian Archaeology and Heritage is delighted at how Benjamin has grown and developed during his time at the university.

“I met Ben during school conferences in Pembrokeshire and here on campus and enjoyed interviewing him after he applied to study here,” she says. “From these encounters, I knew that he was exactly the type of curious student - always having a ‘why’ on his lips – that we need for this particular unusual and comparative programme.

“Together with the help of his lecturers and student support, Ben found strategies to handle his dyslexia and gain confidence in his intellectual abilities. This and very hard work helped him to improve from a 2:2 to a high 2:1. With his quiet yet passionate way of learning and interacting, he is a very integral part of the class.”

Ben will now stay on at Lampeter to study on the newly validated MA Ancient Civilisation, continuing his comparative view on phenomena in ancient Egypt and China.
