As well as celebrating his graduation, Rhys is also delighted to have been presented with two awards – an Award for Industry and an Award for Academic Excellence within UWTSD’s Swansea Business School, demonstrating his commitment to his study and his personal development within the industry which will certainly help his future career developments.

Rhys, a mature student, returned to education after several years of travelling and coaching in North America. The skills and experience that he gained on those adventures allowed him to settle back into education and allowed him to progress from a Higher National Diploma onto the BA Sports Management degree programme.

“I decided to go to university four years ago. I was approaching my thirties and having spent the last ten years working in the sports industry, I was looking for new challenges and also wanting to develop my career path,” says Rhys.

“After some thought and a lot of experience, I felt confident that I had found the career path that I wished to pursue – that of sports development.

“I researched the different courses and universities and decided to apply for the Sports Management degree at UWTSD. It’s a very interesting blend between practical and theory which would help me progress in the sports industry,” Rhys adds.

The general focus of the BA Sports Management degree programme is to provide a flexible programme of study which allows students to develop an expansive knowledge of sports management issues and concepts within the context of the wider sports industry environment and to produce graduates with the relevant skills and abilities to enable them to make an effective contribution in the private, public and voluntary sectors of the sports, health & fitness industry.

The programme will prepare students for future sports and recreation management careers. Early career skills and knowledge will be developed through studying skill acquisition, coaching and instructing processes whilst introducing key theories and issues affecting the sports and leisure industries. The programme will be progressive building on foundation modules students will develop their management skills and knowledge through applied and fieldwork-based modules related to management from a sports perspective.

During his degree, Rhys has managed to complete his UEFA B Licence coaching course and has successfully continued to work whilst also progressing with Celtic Leisure.

“Since undertaking this course, I have further developed my knowledge and understanding of the industry, preparing me for a wide variety of career paths and opportunities. I now feel more confident and able to move forward and pursue a new career in the sports industry, something that would not have been possible without studying the Sports Management degree at UWTSD.“
