Celyn Cartwright

Originally from Denbigh, Celyn is graduating having studied through the medium of Welsh with UWTSD at The Gate Arts Centre in Cardiff. An innovative degree programme taught intensively over two years, the BA Perfformio course ensures that students are thoroughly prepared for a different career pathways within the creative industries.

Celyn has also today been awarded the Stuart Burrows Award – a prize that aims to help students progress in their musical careers  With Celyn being a very familiar face on stages across Wales, it comes as no surprise that she has been awarded this prestigious prize.

“Winning this award is an honour, and it will really help me, financially, seeing as it’s such a competitive sector and is dependent on the ability to fund yourself, but it’s also a great boost for me personally as it shows that I’m doing something right and that I’m going in the right direction!”

Later this Summer, Celyn will be playing the part of Winni Ffini Hadog in the National Eisteddfod’s production of ‘Te yn y Grug’ in Llanrwst. In September, Celyn will begin her MA Musical Theatre studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and is the recipient of the first Catherine Zeta-Jones scholarship – a new scholarship awarded for the first time this year.

Reflecting on her time at the University, Celyn said “These two years at UWTSD have given me an incredible platform for me to be able to refine my craft, and as a result, progress with my studies. The tutors on the course were fantastic, and with some still working in the industry, and others being former actors, everything was of a high standard. Studying the course through the medium of Welsh has been of tremendous help – as Welsh speakers, I believe that we have an advantage as we have excellent institutions such as S4C, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and fantastic Welsh dramas, therefore working through the Welsh language was truly a step in the right direction.”
