Tourism graduate Vicki Brace was UWTSD's first intern with IRONMAN Wales

UWTSD was delighted to welcome Tourism graduate Vicki Brace back to the university for the launch of our new partnership with IRONMAN Wales.

Vicki was UWTSD Tourism’s first Intern with IRONMAN Wales in 2012 and she worked for two summers as part of a paid internship, covering all the IRONMAN events in the UK, including working as volunteer manager at IRONMAN Wales. She also completed a year’s International Tourism placement at Peaks Resort in the Ski Resort of Telluride in Colorado, USA, as well as a summer water sports placement with Rockley Water Sports in France.

The new partnership between UWTSD and IRONMAN Wales, which includes sponsorship of the volunteer programme, will provide opportunities for students and staff to collaborate with IRONMAN on areas related to the University’s portfolio including sports, health and wellbeing, public services, tourism, hospitality, events management as well as film and media.  It will also provide opportunities for applied research including the possibility of undertaking impact studies and reports to inform Ironman Wales in its business planning and future strategy.

Vicki, who was born and raised in Tenby, is now a highly successful marketing consultant running Victoria Brace Marketing, in her home town, specialising in Tourism. Her clients include the award winning FBM Holidays, The Qube Group and The Stackpole Inn.

Vicki said: “Graduating from UWTSD was a huge achievement for me, I was fortunate to have fantastic lecturers that not only supported me through the study aspect of the degree but also the opportunity to gain in-valuable life skills as well as work experience across the world. This is the best way to prepare any student for the workspace and increases your chances of gaining a career in your chosen subject.

"It’s brilliant to see this worldwide race being hosted here with the international publicity it generates. A race like this really does put a place like Tenby on the map! The community and local businesses get involved with locals volunteering and not to forget the number also taking part in the race. I wish the best of luck to all the athletes taking part on Sunday.”

UWTSD's Jacqui Jones, programme director for international tourism, hospitality and leisure resort management, said: "“Vicki is a local girl from Tenby who made the most of every opportunity on offer to her during her Tourism Studies at UWTSD Swansea which included working at Ironman events, international placements in ski resorts in America, water sports in France and field trips to Switzerland. It is wonderful to see how as a result of this and her hard work, her career has flourished and she is now a highly respected Tourism Marketing Consultant here in Tenby.”

The IRONMAN Wales event, to be held on Sunday September, 15, is renowned as much for its toughness as for its spectacular location with athletes competing in an endurance triathlon involving a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle race around South Pembrokeshire and 26.2 mile run around Tenby.
