Rob will start his term in office with NUS Wales in June when he leaves UWTSD and embarks on his exciting new role.

“I’m really proud to be elected as the next NUS Wales President,” says Rob.  “I’m very grateful to everyone who voted and supported me, and I’m excited to start the role later this year, attempting to fill some big shoes!  I was lucky to be involved with the Students’ Union at UWTSD, due to its close-knit community, which definitely helped me develop and prepare me to take on this role."

A graduate of the BA Outdoor Adventure Education course at UWTSD’s Carmarthen campus, Rob started to get involved with the Students’ Union at a time when current NUS Wales President, Gwyneth Sweatman was also a student on the same campus.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to passing on the mantle of President of NUS Wales to another UWTSD alumni, Robert Simkins,” says Gwyneth, current President, former UWTSD Group President and UWTSD Psychology graduate.

“My year as President of our National Union of Students in Wales has been an incredible experience, representing students across Wales. I have had the opportunity to prioritise mental health support for students, and positively influence the student experience of all students in Wales.”

“Both Robert and I had the experience of representing students at Trinity Saint David’s Students’ Union, which was a brilliant opportunity,” adds Gwyneth. “I would encourage all students to think about representing students through the fantastic Students’ Union. Getting engaged with the Students’ Union is without a doubt foundation of our journeys in representation. I am very much looking forward to seeing the work that Robert does, and I am very proud to see the continuation of the strong tradition of representing students nationally in Wales.”

Staff and students at UWTSD are extremely proud of Rob’s success and look forward to seeing what he’ll achieve during his term in office.

“Over the past two years Rob has been very proactive in taking up student opportunities within the QAA, NUS and OFS and as a result is very well informed and placed to lead the national union of students in Wales next year,” says Rhys Dart, Chief Executive of the UWTSD Students’ Union.

“Rob has been an excellent Group President at Trinity Saint David Students’ Union and we look forward to seeing him apply his experience, passion and energy for making students’ lives better to a national scale. We wish him all the very best and looking forward to working with him in his new role.”
