UWTSD hosts Centenary Conference to celebrate the life and work of Timothy Richard

Later this week, the University of Wales Trinity Saint David will host a Centenary Conference at its Lampeter campus celebrating the life and work of Timothy Richard (Li Timotai 李提摩太), a Welsh Baptist missionary who from 1870-1915 spent 45 productive years in China

Timothy Richard

An acquaintance of late Qing reformers such as Kang Youwei, Liang Qichao, Yang Wenhui or Li Hongzhang, Richard’s seemingly inexhaustible energy led to his involvement in the political and social reform movement of the late 19th century, gaining him access to Chinese elite circles including the imperial court.

As journalist, editor and translator of books and pamphlets on current affairs from English into Chinese, he reached large audiences across the country, while his approach to working in a foreign culture inspires Western missionaries and charities working in China until this day.

The conference, entitled “Timothy Richard (1845-1919) in China: A Visionary Between Worlds” is being held at UWTSD's Lampeter campus on October 3-4 2019
