UWTSD Hosts Young Hoteliers and Hospitality Conference 2019


UWTSD’s Institute of Management and Health hosted its second Young Hoteliers and Hospitality Conference at the Swansea Marriott Hotel. The event attracted 230 students from schools and colleges from all over South Wales.

John Howells, Multi-campus Director of International Hotel Management said: “The Institute was delighted to host this event. It gave students a fantastic insight in to all the amazing opportunities available both in Wales and internationally for those who wish to study for, and pursue a career in, the Hotel and Hospitality industry.”

The keynote speaker at the conference was Andrew Campbell, chair of the Wales Tourism Alliance who spoke about a national and international perspective for the hospitality industry in Wales.

Paula Ellis, the CEO of the prestigious Retreats Group based in Pembrokeshire, shared her expertise and knowledge with students. Paula had recently been awarded Independent Hotelier of the year for the UK and was not only the first Welsh winner of the award but also the first female recipient.

Other speakers during the morning included UWTSD’s Debbie Jenkins (Level 4 tutor and student placement organiser), Suzanne Wells (Programme Director Events and Festivals) and Samantha Birdsell (Programme Director of International Hotel Management in Swansea).

At the start of the afternoon session Daniel Spink, Leisure manager of the Swansea Marriott Hotel, examined employability opportunities within the hotel and hospitality industry and gave an overview of his career in the hotel industry outlining the many opportunities that joining an international hotel company had to offer.

UWTSD BA International Hotel Management graduate Muhammad Cassamo, now working as a Course Coordinator in Birmingham for IHM and UWTSD, outlined his career development and gave an excellent insight into student life and highlighted the range of opportunities available to graduates of Hotel and Hospitality Management.

Laurence Blake and Daniel Payne (Final year students on the International Hotel Management Course) shared their journeys at University so far, including trips and placements that had inspired their progress.

John Howells, Multi-campus Director of International Hotel Management, concluded the conference by looking forward to the 3rd Young Hoteliers and Hospitality Conference in 2020.
