The PhD studentships are funded by the Knowledge Economy Skills Scholarship (KESS 2 East) scheme and are intended to start in February 2020.

In collaboration with the Eisteddfod, the successful candidate will explore the digital opportunities as the Eisteddfod develops and implements its international strategy. The project will examine three aspect of the contribution of digital technology to the international strategy: professional development, artistic programme and the community engagement strategy.

Betsan Moses, Chief Executive of the National Eisteddfod said: “This scholarship will provide a unique opportunity for an individual to be part of an exciting development in the history of the Eisteddfod as we refine our priorities and create a dynamic festival with an international appeal. The results of this research will inform our long-term strategies.”

Working with Graffeg Ltd, UWTSD is also offering a PhD scholarship looking at the internationalization of illustrated stories for children. The successful candidate will investigate the appropriate strategies the Welsh publishing sector needs to develop and implement so that it can operate successfully at international level in the field of children’s illustrated stories. This project will focus on three specific aspects: import; export and co-production.

“Graffeg are continually developing their children’s list with books by talented authors and illustrators, some with international reputations,” said Peter Gill of Graffeg. “The PhD scholarship will allow us to devote resources to working with publishers throughout Europe and North America to expand our print co-editions and secure digital opportunities with partner publishers.”

Commenting on these exciting research opportunities, Professor Elin Haf Gruffydd Jones of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David said: "These two PhD scholarships offer unique opportunities to work internationally and in Wales, combining digital technology with the creative and cultural sector. Investing in innovative research projects like these is essential to the development of the creative industries here in Wales and further afield.”
