UWTSD researchers share their findings with North Wales BAME Community Programme

Psychologists from UWTSD have been in North Wales sharing their research findings on prejudice with the All Wales Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Engagement Programme.

Dr Paul Hutchings presented the recent research carried out alongside Katie Sullivan for her PhD thesis examining the effects of prejudice on the Brexit vote and attitudes towards migration.

Dr Hutchings said: “We are really glad that we can get out to organisations directly dealing with BAME issues, asylum seekers and refugees, because this is ultimately what research is all about; how we can take the academic research that we carry out and have a real impact with the people who are most directly affected by these issues.”

Lee Tiratira, North Wales Regional Coordinator for the Ethnic Minorities and Youth Support Team (EYST) Wales, who organised the event, said: “The insights expressed across the research had huge amounts of positive feedback from participants. I, as well as others present, felt that this research had tangible effects on how we perceive prejudice as well as the many forms in which it can occur. The research adds new reflection and thought towards our daily work across Wales. I would also welcome sharing its impact across Wales.”

Dr Ceri Phelps, Academic Discipline Lead for Psychology in Yr Athrofa at UWTSD said: “This is what the Psychology team at UWTSD aims to do; researching real world issues and working alongside community organisations to share this expertise in ways which can change practice and ultimately improve lives.”
