Now in its third year, the awards aim to inspire more women to join the industry and to promote and celebrate the many fantastic female success stories which exist within IT.

Dr Abuhmida, a former graduate of UWTSD, and a lecturer in Software and Microprocessor Development at the University’s School of Applied Computing, has been nominated in the category of Role Model of 2019 for her work as a STEM ambassador.

She said: “I came to this University as a student 10 years ago, graduating with a BEng in Computer Systems and Electronics, an MSc and a PhD in Computer Networks and most recently a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, which led to a fellowship in teaching.

“I am a STEM ambassador, and I have always promoted females in IT fields. I have given public lectures and talks at many events including Soapbox Science, and at IET to mark the Year of Women in Engineering. I was one of the organisers of the first TEDx women in Swansea events. The topic of diversity and equality is one of my passions and I always look to develop my skills to support people within this field.

“I had an early start to my research career, working on a funded cyber-security project in the field of online banking in collaboration with UWTSD and Swansea University.”
